Elizabeth’s world felt very small when she first learned about VIM Cascades. She was lonely, depressed, and piecing together odd jobs to make ends meet. When someone suggested she volunteer at VIM Cascades as an interpreter, she took a chance, and that simple “yes” gave her a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. At the clinic she found the and she had been craving.
Inspired by the clinic’s mission and the kindness of its volunteers, Elizabeth began giving her time regularly. She loved helping other patients feel seen and understood. Eventually, she had to step away when she secured a full-time job. The stability was a blessing, but it also meant she no longer qualified for Medicaid and suddenly found herself without health insurance, stuck in the gap so many working adults in Central Oregon face.
Not long after, Elizabeth’s legs went numb and stayed that way for more than a week. Worried, her boss urged her to seek medical care. Thankfully, she had just applied to become a patient at VIM Cascades. As her symptoms worsened and she needed hospital testing, she was terrified, not only about what doctors might find, but also how she would ever afford it. At St. Charles, staff reassured her that her care would be provided pro bono through their partnership with VIM, lifting a huge weight off her shoulders.
Her testing is still ongoing, and there are signs she may have multiple sclerosis. It is a frightening possibility, but in the midst of that fear, something beautiful emerged: the same people she once served alongside as a are now caring for her as a . Being embraced by that familiar, compassionate community has brought Elizabeth comfort and strength at one of the hardest moments in her life.
To Elizabeth, VIM Cascades is so much more than a clinic. She found hope, support, and a true sense of belonging here. Her story shows how VIM Cascades provides not just , but human connection and dignity for those who might otherwise fall through the cracks.
