When trauma makes your amygdala (the brain’s alarm center) too active and your insula (the area that senses safety) less active, your brain stays on high alert, seeing danger everywhere, even when you’re actually safe.
Research shows that gentle, slow touch activates nerve fibers called C-tactile fibers, which help your insula calm down and better control stress. Healing and learning to feel truly safe takes time and happens through repeated gentle sensory experiences, not just thinking about it. This means relaxation comes from retraining your body and brain through consistent, mindful touch.
