Ultrasound is a game changer in diagnosis and aftercare for babies with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Ultrasound helps:
- detect spina bifida complications such as hydrocephalus and bladder problems
- guide treatment for best outcomes

We’ve now delivered point-of-care ultrasound machines to six of our Centers of Excellence partner hospitals across Ethiopia.🌍

It’s a big step forward and in the months ahead, more hospitals will receive both equipment and hands-on training as we continue expanding access to early diagnosis and quality care for children impacted by neural tube defects.

🌟 Marbella is a bright and lively one-year-old little girl who underwent spina bifida repair surgery as a newborn.

She is on clean intermittent catheterization and receives ongoing follow-up through our aftercare program, where a coordinator monitors her care via phone and multidisciplinary clinic visits. She also participates in physical therapy to enhance her mobility.

Through the collective efforts of her medical team and her loving family ❤️, Marbella has reached all her developmental milestones. She communicates confidently and walks independently — a true testament to her resilience and the power of early intervention and family-centered care. ✨

Mohammed is 16 months old. He loves trampoline time 🤸 and is already impressing everyone with his speech abilities. He also lives with spina bifida.

Thanks to early surgery, physiotherapy, and dedicated follow-up from his family and care team at Hiwot Fana Hospital, Mohammed is making remarkable progress. 🌟

Stories like his are powerful reminders of the impact of early intervention and multidisciplinary care—shared directly by our SBH Coordinator at Hiwot Fana. ❤️

For the first time in its history, Zewditu Hospital now has a CT scan housed within the new Center of Excellence for Pediatric Neurosurgery.✨

So far, 414 patients have already benefited from this vital diagnostic tool. Having a CT scan on-site means faster, safer, and more accurate care especially for children with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and other urgent conditions.

A heartfelt thanks to the Helmsley Charitable Trust for investing in transforming care for children in Ethiopia.

📊 4,800+ SBH surgeries
🧠 300+ children treated with ETV/CPC
💧 51% drop in infections
❤️ 34% reduction in mortality

This is what happens when you combine advanced surgical training, the right equipment, and teams that believes every child’s life is worth fighting for. These numbers represent real progress in spina bifida and hydrocephalus care. We’ve been tracking, learning, and growing and the results speak for themselves.

We’re proud to celebrate a growing collaboration that’s making waves in prevention between ReachAnother Foundation, the Alliance For Birth Defect, and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

Together, we are raising the bar for large-scale food fortification in Ethiopia, a powerful, cost-effective way to prevent neural tube defects before they happen.

This partnership has already:
✅ Funded community dialogues with families and wheat flour millers
✅ Launched a public podcast reaching health professionals nationwide
✅ Led critical conversations at Ethiopia’s national neurosurgery conference
✅ Elevated the voice of parents in shaping health policy and awareness

Food fortification is about advocacy, collaboration, mothers asking better for their children, neurosurgeons standing up for prevention, and millers stepping in as allies. The momentum is building!
