Productive Sunday morning with some of our favorite partners in Atlanta.
The discussion was lively, ideas were flying but what really stood out was the passion everyone brought to the table. We are working to improve care for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Ethiopia and it felt like together, anything is possible.🌍

✅ Every one of our eight of our Center of Excellence partner hospitals throughout Ethiopia have now completed comprehensive spina bifida and hydrocephalus training, a milestone years in the making!

But the biggest achievement is that hundreds of healthcare professionals, especially nurses, are now working as unified, multidisciplinary teams to provide coordinated care for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

Even more powerful is the shift in mindset: providers who once saw SBH as “hopeless” now speak with confidence, compassion, and renewed commitment. One nurse shared: “Before the training, we used to feel sorry for these children. Now we know how to help them.”

This week, nurses and midwives from four partner hospitals in Addis gathered for a high-risk prevention training focused on reaching mothers who’ve had a previous pregnancy affected by spina bifida.

By teaching medical professionals to identify and support these women with the right dose of folic acid at the right time, we’re taking powerful steps to prevent neural tube defects before they begin.

Grateful to Rotary International and our partners for fueling this life-saving work.

💙 When 8-year-old Robel began losing his vision due to hydrocephalus, his family was told he needed a shunt but that was scary for them as they feared long term risks.

✨ But thanks to the ETV (endoscopic third ventriculostomy) program at Hawassa Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, supported by ReachAnother, Robel had access to a safer, shunt-free alternative. His surgery was a success and his vision fully restored.

Today, he’s back in school, attends regular follow up visits through the SBH multidisciplinary clinic and is a thriving little boy.

Healing takes follow-up. It takes tools, training, parent education, physiotherapy, multidisciplinary support—and a system that can hold it all.

That’s why we don’t just count procedures. We build ecosystems that change the way Ethiopia thinks about and cares for children born with neural tube defects.

Because a child’s recovery isn’t a single event, it’s a journey. 🌍✨

This September, ReachAnother is proud to support Hydrocephalus Awareness Month and today, we stand with the world in recognizing World Hydrocephalus Day. 🌍

We are proud to play our part by strengthening early detection and care systems in Ethiopia, from expanding access to shunt-free treatment like ETV to building hospital-based aftercare teams that walk with families every step of the way.🌟

One of ReachAnother’s most important goals is now within reach: establishing Ethiopia’s first-ever pediatric neurosurgery specialty and fellowship training program. Dr. Kibru Zewdie is currently completing a year long fellowship at Children's Hospital Colorado and will return with advanced skills and global experience to help launch Ethiopia’s first accredited fellowship program which will train the next generation of pediatric neurosurgeons in Ethiopia.

"Learning advanced surgical techniques, protocols, and multidisciplinary care in Colorado will allow me to adapt and integrate these best practices, tailoring them to the resources available while striving to elevate the standard of pediatric neurosurgical care in Ethiopia." - Dr. Kibru Zewdie
