📣 Movement Monday!

Swings aren’t just fun, they are a powerful tool for development! 🚀

Swinging provides vestibular input, which is a type of sensory input that supports balance, coordination, and body awareness. Research shows that engaging the vestibular system can help kiddos improve attention, self-regulation, and motor planning skills.

Whether it’s front-to-back, side-to-side, or spinning, swings give the brain and body the chance to practice movement in a safe and playful way. Plus, they build core strength and endurance while giving kids a big dose of joy! 🤩

If your kiddo could benefit from vestibular activities like this, give us a call to learn more about how we use swings in therapy sessions.

📣 Fine Motor Friday!

🧩 Puzzles are a great way to build important developmental skills 🤫 And here’s a secret, it doesn’t just develop fine motor skills!

Picking up, rotating, and fitting pieces together strengthens fine motor strength and dexterity, but also helps with visual-motor integration! 👀

✨But what is visual-motor integration (VMI)?

VMI skills include:
⭐️ visual perception
(how we understand what we see) 🧠
⭐️ oculomotor
(how our eyes move in an organized fashion) 👁️
⭐️ visual spatial
(how we understanding orientation) ⬆️⬇️
⭐️ hand-eye coordination (how we coordinate movements like catching a ball) 🤲

VMI and fine motor skills work closely together to help us navigate the world. These developmental skills work together to support everyday activities like handwriting, dressing, and even playing sports.

🧩 Puzzles are a fun and easy way to build up these skills! Plus, puzzles help with problem-solving and patience too! 👏

📣 Ways We Communicate Wednesday!

👉 Did you know that gestures like pointing, waving, or reaching are an important step in communication development?

Before kiddos use words, gestures help them share what they want, show you what excites them, and connect socially with others. These early nonverbal skills lay the foundation for language growth and stronger interactions with family and friends. 👧👦

✨ Next time you’re with your kiddo, notice what they’re pointing to 👆Take a moment to share in their excitement and connect over what lights them up most! 🩵

🐻🐸🦀 Animal walks aren’t just silly fun, they’re a powerful tool for building strength, coordination, and proprioception!

But what is proprioception? 🧠🦵

Proprioception is your body’s ability to know where it is in space. It helps us organize our movements so that we can successfully move around our environment 🌎 Whether it’s frog hopping on pretend lily pads 🐸 or crab walking down the hallway 🦀 these movements help kiddos improve body awareness, balance, and motor planning!

📣 Fine Motor Friday!

Little tools, BIG gains! 🤏

Using tweezers to find small objects in a sensory bin, pick them up of the counter, or to put them into containers helps with so many skill areas:
⭐️ Strengthens the small muscles in the hands and fingers⭐️ Improves pincer grasp (important for holding a ✏️ pencil)⭐️ Boosts hand-eye coordination (important for 📕 reading and 📝 writing!)⭐️ Prepares kiddos for daily tasks like buttoning 👕 zipping, and feeding themselves🍴

A simple activity like picking up pom-poms, beads, or even snack foods with tweezers can make a big difference in your kiddo’s fine motor development. 🙌

New activity alert! 🗣️

At LHT, we love using interactive movement-based games to support:

🧠 Body Awareness: Kids learn where their bodies are in space as they jump, reach, twist, and balance in response to the game.
💪 Upper Extremity Strengthening: Games that involve throwing, pushing, or reaching help build strength in arms and shoulders without feeling like “work.”
🌟 Core Strengthening: Standing balance, trunk rotation, and controlled movement challenge those core muscles which are key for posture, coordination, and attention.

It’s fun and functional - kids are motivated, moving, and building essential skills at the same time! 💥

At Little Hands Therapy, we believe in strength-based therapy!

But what is strength-based therapy? It means we focus on what kiddos CAN do! One of our favorite strategies? Using a kiddo’s special interests to guide our sessions. 🚀🎨🧩

Whether it’s trains, dinosaurs, baking, or letters, incorporating what a kiddo loves makes therapy more meaningful, engaging, and fun 🤪 We might shape activities around letter hunts for gross motor skills, alphabet puzzles for fine motor work, or sound games for speech and language. Their interest becomes our tool! Which makes therapy feel more like play and less like work. 🧩🔤💪

When kiddos feel seen and supported in their passions, they are more motivated to participate, try hard things, and build new skills along the way. Progress doesn’t have to mean pushing harder, sometimes it just means meeting a kiddo exactly where they shine. 💫
