Meet Raymond Bradley: Owner, Funeral Director, and Embalmer at Joyce-Brady Chapel.

Raymond has worked in funeral service for over 30 years. He believes this is a career that picks you, rather than the other way around. He began working for JBC in 2011 as a trade embalmer. He’s always had aspirations to own and operate his own funeral home, and by 2016 that dream became a reality. His approach is always people-first. Coming to JBC in your time of need is an honor he does not take for granted.

Outside of funeral service, Raymond is passionate about music. He believes music is a powerful force that helps connect people to one another, cope with challenging circumstances, and articulate the meanings of life. At his funeral, he requests “If I Could Only Fly” by Merle Haggard to be played. 🕊️

This isn’t easy. Everyone processes differently. It’s important to remember that it’s a natural event, and children do not have to be shielded from talks of death. Here’s some tips on how to have that conversation:

⭐️ Be honest! Sometimes it can feel better to use phrases like “Grandma went to sleep and is not going to wake up,” or “God took grandma to be with the angels!” Although this feels comforting, it has the potential to be taken more literally in the mind of a child. In response, they could develop a fear of sleeping because they think the same thing could happen to them. Instead, you can present the facts literally and truthfully while still being gentle. For example, “Grandma’s heart got too tired and stopped working, so she died.”

⭐️ Keep it age appropriate. You can ask them questions to determine what they may already know about death. Their age and emotional development will contribute to their level of understanding. Ages 2-7 see death as a separation event, 7-12 begin to see it as a permanent event, and teens begin to process death the way adults do.

⭐️ Listen to their feelings in response. For younger children who haven’t mastered verbalizing emotion, you may see shifts in their behavior. They may start to “act out” as a way of processing grief. Children in the mid range may take measures to protect themselves from death out of fear. Teens may begin to ask recklessly as an attempt to defy death, putting them at risk of fatal consequences.

⭐️ Be patient! It’s important to be aware of the shifts in moods, behaviors, health, and actions. If drastic shifts persist, seek counseling to help the child process in a safe and healthy environment.

It’s never too early to start preparing!

Although these conversations can be challenging, being prepared can make the outcome so much easier. Here’s how to start:

⭐️ Meet with a funeral director. This meeting can ensure that all questions get answered, your needs are prioritized, and it provides an outlet to make decisions that aren’t emotionally-charged.

⭐️ Determine your service preferences. Do you want to be buried or cremated? Where do you want the service to be held? How do you want to be celebrated? Where do you want your permanent resting place to be? And so on!

⭐️ Make your selections on your fixture. There are varieties of caskets and urns, headstones, and other personalization opportunities to decide from.

⭐️ WRITE 👏 IT 👏 DOWN! 👏 Having a written reference ensures your wishes are fulfilled. Without this, important details may not be known and your loved ones are left making these decisions on your behalf.

There’s a lot of reasons to plan ahead. After all, it is the inevitable. Our top reasons are:

⭐️ It lets your wishes be known. Losing someone can bring unwarranted stress and turmoil among families. Instead of leaving important decisions up to your grieving loved ones, you can prevent disagreements and allow them to focus on what’s important.

⭐️ You can explore flexible funding options. Having a preneed insurance policy, a life insurance policy, or other payment options can all be arranged prior to. Reducing the potential for financial stress at the time of death is another benefit to planning ahead.

⭐️ It relieves the burden from family. Upon death of a loved one, there are more than 150 decisions that have to be made in the first two days following. The more preplanning done, the more time allowed for your loved ones to begin healing.
