🚨 Ensuring Life-Saving AEDs Are Truly Accessible 🚨

Having an AED on site is great — but one often overlooked factor is that when emergency strikes, AED’s that aren’t visible and easily accessible are rarely utilized. Here’s what the AHA, ADA, and most state guidelines say about proper AED placement 👇

✅ Height:
Mount the AED so the handle is no higher than 48 inches (4 ft) off the ground and at least 36 inches above the floor. This keeps it accessible to everyone, including those with disabilities (ADA standard).

✅ Visibility:
Place AEDs in high-traffic, central locations like lobbies, hallways, or near elevators. Use clear signage that can be seen from a distance.

✅ Accessibility:
A rescuer should be able to reach and return within 3 minutes of a cardiac arrest — a key AHA benchmark. Avoid locked rooms or hidden corners.

✅ Compliance:
Check local and state regulations — many require AEDs to be registered with EMS and have visible signage or floor coverage requirements.

Great job Valas Safety Team and Gretna Fire.
⚡ The Chain of Survival Saves Lives ⚡

When Sudden Cardiac Arrest strikes, every second counts. The Chain of Survival is a proven system that turns bystanders into lifesavers:

1️⃣ Early Recognition & 911 — Know the signs and call for help fast.
2️⃣ Early CPR — Keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs.
3️⃣ Early Defibrillation — An AED can restart the heart within minutes.
4️⃣ Advanced Life Support — Paramedics bring critical interventions.
5️⃣ Post-Cardiac Care — Hospitals protect and repair the heart.

💥 Each link depends on the one before it. Strengthen the chain — learn CPR, know where your AED is, and act fast.

Creating Safety Through Preparedness.

**EDIT: This photo was taken during a joint training exercise with Gretna Fire and Vala’s staff

Earlier this week, a critical medical incident occurred at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch that required an immediate and coordinated response. Gretna Firefighter/EMTs and Firefighter/Paramedics on duty, the on-site medical staff at Vala’s, the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, and other Vala’s team members all worked seamlessly together to provide rapid, life-saving care.

This event is a powerful reminder that it truly takes a village. In moments like these, every role — from first responders to medical staff to supporting team members — plays a vital part in ensuring the best possible outcome. The professionalism, communication, and teamwork displayed by everyone involved made all the difference.

Equally important is what comes after — taking time to debrief and support one another. Critical incidents can be emotionally challenging, and debriefings help teams process what happened, learn from each experience, and take care of their own mental and emotional well-being.

We’re proud of the dedication, compassion, and cooperation shown by everyone involved. When emergencies happen, our community stands strong together.

🚨 A LIFE SAVED THROUGH PREPAREDNESS 🚨

Today, one of our rental program customers deployed their AED during a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) emergency — and because of their quick action and proper training, the patient achieved ROSC (Return of Spontaneous Circulation).

That means… the heart restarted. ❤️
A life was saved.

This is exactly why we do what we do at Talacko Safety Solutions.

Every minute without CPR and defibrillation decreases survival chances by 10%.
Having an AED on-site — and knowing how to use it — can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.

When sudden cardiac arrest strikes, the average EMS response time in most areas is 7–10 minutes.
But a person can die in under 3 minutes without immediate intervention.

✅ CPR buys time.
⚡ The AED brings them back.
🏥 EMS carries them forward.

This real-world save proves that preparedness saves lives — not tomorrow, not someday, but today.

We are beyond proud that one of our AED partners was able to act quickly, confidently, and effectively when it mattered most.

🚨 We have to say it — we completely DISAGREE with AHA on this one!

With the latest LUCAS mechanical CPR devices, we’re seeing better results than ever before. In fact, we’re needing to intra-code sedate more often — because patients are waking up during resuscitation!

That’s right — the brain and body are being perfused so effectively that patients are regaining consciousness mid-code. Mechanical CPR is keeping the brain, heart, and body so well-oxygenated that they think they’re alive.

Before devices like the LUCAS, no one was delivering truly consistent, high-quality compressions for 20+ minutes or down three flights of stairs in a rescue. Now, it’s possible — and it’s saving lives.

There has to be more to this story… or maybe Stryker just made someone mad.

🚨 What if everything you thought you knew about spinal immobilization… was wrong? 🚨

You’ve got a trauma patient. Maybe they fell. Maybe it’s a rollover. You strap on a c-collar, secure the backboard, and feel like you’ve done everything right.

But what if that collar is hurting them more than helping?

What if the backboard is doing more harm than good?

An important review from NAEMSP just dropped, and it challenges decades of prehospital dogma.

📚 The Study:
Over 3,900 papers screened
115 studies included in analysis

Topics: spinal immobilization, motion restriction (SMR), delayed neurological injury, and associated harms

🧠 What They Found:
• Zero studies showed a clear clinical benefit to spinal immobilization or SMR
• 55 studies showed patient harm
• Immobilization may actually increase spinal movement during transport, especially at the c-spine to thorax junction
• Stronger evidence links hypoperfusion, not movement, to worsening neuro outcomes

⚠️ One study claimed a benefit, but had major flaws:
• Included patients with moderate disability as a "favorable outcome"
• Did not control for blood pressure
• Excluded patients with traumatic brain injury

✅ Takeaway:
• There’s no high-quality evidence that immobilization prevents spinal cord injury
• There’s plenty of evidence that it causes harm
• Focus should shift to resuscitation and perfusion, not strapping patients to boards

🛑 Bottom line: It’s time to rethink the collar and backboard. Use them only during extrication, not transport. And don’t let old habits cause new harm.

📖 This review from NAEMSP is a must-read for EMS medical directors, educators, and field providers alike.https://www.handtevy.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Prehospital-Trauma-Compendium-Prehospital-Management-of-Spinal-Cord-Injuries-A-NAEMSP-Comprehensive-Review-and-Analysis-of-the-Literature.pdf
