Vermont has the third highest rate of melanoma in the Unites States and New Hampshire is in the top 10. Practicing sun safe behaviors (covering up, seeking shade, and wearing sunscreen) can help reduce your risk for developing melanoma.

For people insured through Medicare or a Medicare Replacement Plan, one of the biggest—and often overlooked—benefits is qualifying for a free Annual Wellness Visit (AWV).

SVMC's Amanda Shakar, BSN, RN, explains: "An AWV takes a big-picture view of your health. We provide your usual primary care clinician with a complete picture of your health and you with a preventative care plan that outlines recommended tests, screenings, and preventative services. The aim is to improve your health today and prevent future disease.”

Congratulations to two exceptional SVMC nurses who received DAISY Awards this summer!

Jennifer Archibald, RN, who works on the Medical-Surgical Unit and Morgan Hutchins, RN, of Women’s and Children’s Services, were each recently presented with the DAISY Award for Exceptional Nurses after receiving individual nominations.

Jennifer’s nomination came after her compassionate care to a patient with cognitive challenges, who had a long length of stay at SVMC. The nominator wrote: “This particular nurse was able to connect with the patient in a way that helped keep her calm, safe, and cared for. She would often take the patient around the organization to keep her calm and provide new environments to switch up the monotony of living in a hospital. The patient responded so well to her patient, calm and caring demeanor and while she wasn't always able to express her thoughts and feelings, it was apparent that she trusted this nurse above most others. The patient could be challenging at times and yet this nurse maintained her professionalism, her upbeat positive demeanor, and would always respond with kindness and empathy.”

Morgan was nominated by pregnant patient, who wrote: “I have a high-risk pregnancy, so there are a lot of fears and concerns associated with the early induction process and labor. Although my stay isn’t over and Morgan will be here for the duration of my stay, I want to commend her for comforting me and answering any questions I have. She’s very compassionate, attentive and is a good listener and isn’t hesitant to escalate any concerns. I’m grateful to have her as my nurse during my induction and labor. This is a very scary process for me and I came in with a lot of anxiety, but her reassurance and attentiveness has put my mental state in a much better place and I feel extremely safe in her care.”

Thank you both for all you do!

Did you know: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about 93% of Vermont infants born in 2021 had been breastfed, compared to a national average of 84%. At 12 months of age, about 57% of Vermont babies are breastfed, exceeding the national average of about 40%. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and encourages parents to continue until two years or beyond.

As Vermont marks World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1-7) we want to remind our community of free lactation and support services open to moms in our area.

Baby Café is held every Wednesday at the Bennington Community Market. It’s a free, drop-in, informal breastfeeding support group offering ongoing professional lactation care with SVMCs team and social connection for young moms. Open every Wednesday, from 11 am to 12:30 pm, lunch is included.
