Minnesota’s flu season is in full swing. Flu activity and positive test rates are climbing earlier than many past years, with cases increasing as we head into the holiday season.

With an influx of viral respiratory illnesses spreading through our communities, here are a few important reminders that may save you a trip to a busy waiting room with others who are sick.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀:

1. You are most contagious 3-5 days from onset of symptoms, and you should stay home during that time.

2. Nasal congestion, sore throat and progression to a cough, sometimes days later, all happen as the normal course of a viral respiratory illness and don’t require treatment.

3. Viral illnesses (cold, flu, RSV, COVID-19) don’t respond to antibiotics and can take up to 2 weeks to go away.

4. Fever is common. Treat the discomfort with Tylenol or Ibuprofen (only for ages over 6 months).

5. In Urgent Care or Walk-In Care, we don’t always test for the virus because it doesn’t change the outcome of the treatment.

6. Seek care if symptoms last longer than 2 weeks or suddenly worsen.
