May 22 is "Don't Fry Day," a reminder to protect your skin as we head into summer.

Designated by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, the Friday before Memorial Day encourages everyone to take small, simple steps for sun safety. Skin cancer continues to be the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. Each year, an estimated 6.1 million people are treated for skin cancer. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.

Protect your skin by:
☀️ Applying sunscreen
☀️ Wearing protective clothing
☀️ Staying out of the sun during peak hours
☀️ Seeking shade whenever possible outside

And if you've noticed a suspicious skin spot, it's important to have it checked out to properly evaluate the spot and determine if it's something to be concerned about. Early detection of skin cancer is crucial for successful treatment.

Know the risk factors of stroke.

Cholesterol levels are checked through blood draws. If you know your numbers, a total cholesterol of less than 200 and LDL less than 100 are ideal.

If you have had a stroke, your LDL level goal should be below 70. Your stroke risk increases with elevated cholesterol as this can increase the risk of fatty buildup (plaque), clotting and /or a blockage in your arteries.

High blood pressure is when the pressure of the blood against the blood vessel walls is too strong. If left untreated, this can cause strain on the vessels and increase your risk of a stroke.

A normal blood pressure is less than 120/80. If your numbers are higher than this, reach out to your primary care provider for further management.

A stroke can change how you move, speak, think, or live your daily life in an instant. It's hard to quit smoking. Help is available and getting help now can significantly lower your risk and protect your brain in the future.

Smoking lowers the oxygen in your blood and damages your blood vessels, making them narrower and weaker. This increases the chance that a clot can form and block blood flow to your brain, causing a stroke.
