Mental Health Monday: How gut health and mental health are correlated🧠🥗

Ever get a “gut feeling?” Well, listen to your gut! It’s got a lot to say about your mood. Using research covered by UCHealth and John’s Hopkins Medicine, our discussion today surrounds the mind-gut link. The mind-gut link has been theorized to contribute much to one’s overall health, let alone one’s mental health.

Spice, or anti-depressant?🌶️

This Mental Health Monday, we’re looking into the properties of one of the world’s most expensive spices. Saffron has been studied as a potential combatant of symptoms such as anxiety and depression. According to researchers, taking approximately 20-30mg of saffron daily for around 3 months can reduce said symptoms, and provide other health benefits. Exceeding 5 grams of saffron daily can be toxic.

The studies mentioned within this post are “Effects of Saffron Extract Supplementation on Mood, Well-Being, and Response to a Psychosocial Stressor in Healthy Adults” by Phillippa Jackson, et al., and “An Examination into the Effects of a Saffron Extract (Affron) on Mood and General Wellbeing in Adults Experiencing Low Mood” by Adrian Lopretsi, et al.
