Flu season is in full swing!!! We are seeing lots of positive A strains 🤧😷 Common symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, sore throat, cough, etc… We have had a lot of questions about treatment options. The flu is a virus and in most healthy individuals does not need to be treated with prescription medications. However high risk patients may benefit from prescription treatment. Tamiflu is the most commonly prescribed medication. Xofluxa is another one dose option. Both should be started within 48 hours of symptoms starting.
Most people with the flu recover within one to two weeks without medical or prescription treatment. Keep yourself hydrated, rested and you can use OTC medicine to help manage symptoms if needed.
However, serious complications of the flu can occur especially in high risk patients (infants, elderly, pregnant women, diabetics, individuals with asthma/COPD, etc...). Seek further evaluation immediately if:
*You feel short of breath or have trouble breathing
*You have pain or pressure in your chest or stomach
*You have signs of being dehydrated, such as dizziness when standing or not passing urine
*You feel confused
*You cannot stop vomiting or you cannot drink enough fluids
In children, you should seek help if the child has any of the above or if the child:
*Has blue or purplish skin color
*Is so irritable that he or she does not want to be held
*Does not have tears when crying (in infants)
*Has a fever with a rash
*Does not wake up easily
*Does not want to drink fluids or has not been going p*e at least 3 times in a day.
When can you go back to work/school? That's a tricky one. Technically you are contagious for a day or two before you even have symptoms and you can be contagious for several days after symptoms resolve 🤔. It's nearly unavoidable. The typical rule of thumb is no returning to work/school until you are fever free (body aches and chills free too) for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducers. If in doubt stay home.
Of course you want to practice good hand washing and always cover your cough. Use good hygiene practices.
Avoid elderly, small children and high risk individuals if you are at all concerned that you may be ill with the flu. Try to stay home!
Don't forget to get new toothbrushes too!!!
We hope everyone stays healthy but we are here if you need us! Give us a call if you need to make an appointment.
