In Memory of

Suzette McDougal Story, 79, of Possum Trot, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Marshall County Hospital, as her husband, David, held her hand beside her.

Suzette was born on October 29, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Cletus William McDougal and Louella Young McDougal. From a young age, Suzette’s intelligence and love of horses had already begun to shine. At the age of 16, after soaring through high school in just two years, she graduated from North Marshall High School in 1964 as salutatorian. In 1965, just one year later, she had already graduated from Draughons Business College with her associate's degree. During these early years in her life, Suzette was always very proud for having been able to lead the Tater Day Parade on horseback on several occasions. On May 29, 1965, Suzette married the love of her life, David Story, and the couple began their amazing journey through life together for the next 61 years.

Suzette was a hardworking woman who found joy in keeping herself busy. She spent many years working as an Office Manager for Southern Roofing and Accurate Door and Hardware before retiring. During those years, she had a variety of roles that kept her active outside of work. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Marshall County Homemakers Association, while also being active within Brownies, Girl Scouts, and 4-H. She and her husband both shared a huge love for the Rodeo. In 1966 and 1967, she served as the Nationally Bonded Secretary for the International Rodeo Association, now known as IPRA. Suzette was one of the founding members of the Kentucky High School Rodeo Association, where she served as secretary for many years, and a founding member of the Kentucky High School Rodeo Scholarship. She later went on to serve 7 years as the Cutting Area Secretary for the National High School Rodeo Association and was on the committee for the National High School Rodeo Scholarship Foundation, where they helped children further their education through various routes.

As a woman of faith, she was a long time member of Zion’s Cause Baptist Church, where she also was a pianist during her younger years, and would often play the piano or attend other local churches from time to time. Suzette was blessed with many talents that she later turned into hobbies. As a lifelong artist, a gift she received from her mother, she loved drawing, creating artwork, and making pottery. Her gift for finding the beauty in the outdoors was obvious through her love of photography and her amazing ability to capture nature through the lens. However, she never forgot to put down the camera and enjoy the outdoors for herself. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tending to her flowers. Amongst all of her talents, she was also a gifted seamstress and cook. Suzette lived a full life, one that not only allowed her to express herself through many of her God-given talents, but also by enabling others to pursue their ambitions, all while being surrounded by the love of all her family and close friends.

She is survived by her husband, David Story of Possum Trot; her daughter, Becky Bone of Benton; her three sisters, Patricia Travis of Benton, Vicki Vied of Symsonia, and Joy Park (Tommy) of Sharpe; her two brothers, David McDougal (Sarah) of Sharpe and Gary Dean McDougal (Sue) of Possum Trot; her three grandchildren, Maria Bone, Paige Story, and Shane Story; several nieces and nephews; and her large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her son, John Story; several step-siblings; and her parents, Cletus and Louella McDougal.

In Memory of

Julie Ann Copeland, 67, of Calvert City, Kentucky, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

Julie was born on September 13, 1958, in Murray, Kentucky, to the late Norman Ray English and Shirley Burke English. Having been raised in Marshall County her whole life, Julie was a 1976 graduate of Marshall County High School. Her fascination for both history and politics led her to later attend Murray State University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and received her Master’s Degree, majoring in History and German Political Science.

Julie was not a stranger to hard work. From the young age of 13 and up into her mid-40’s, she spent many years working as a waitress at Kentucky Maid, Patti’s Settlement, and a variety of other local restaurants. She also spent many years working as a Program Manager for the Veterans Administration, and later went to work for several years at the Salvation Army before officially retiring. During these years, she also found many ways to donate or volunteer her time with various groups and organizations. She served as the secretary of the Democratic Party, volunteered to be on the committee for the Division of Reentry Services, helping inmates transition back to society, along with many other organizations. With her generous and kind heart, Julie also made it a point to always go out of her way to help others and loved fighting for the underdogs.

Outside of her strong compassion for others, Julie was passionate about many things in life. She loved being outdoors, camping, and going fishing. Having a competitive spirit, she always enjoyed a good trivia game with family and friends, and may have been known to cheat a time or two if it meant that she would win. She also had a huge love for music, and throughout the years, even taught herself how to play multiple instruments. She was a massive UK Basketball fan and loved supporting and cheering for “her Cats.” Even her grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart, were all coached by Julie while they were babies to try to make their first words “Go Cats!” Undoubtedly, her love for UK Basketball was obvious to anyone who knew her, and in her house, “Cat season was always open.”

She is survived by her two daughters, Regan Emerson (Ryan) of Calvert City and LeaAndrea “Andee” York of Calvert City; her stepdaughter, Anessa Turner of Calvert City; her stepson, Damon Turner of Texas; one sister, Kellie Harrell (Jeff) of Calvert City; one brother, Doug Hinshaw (Carolyn) of Gibson City, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Clay Emerson, London Emerson, Kinsley Crisp, Nolan Crisp, Jaden Turner, Lily Edging, Bella Franklin, and Silas Franklin; one great-grandchild, Raylan Thomasson; and several very close nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her partner of 22 years, Mark Turner; her two sisters, Sherry Barrett and Cindy Hinshaw; and her parents, Norman and Shirley English.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to A Soldier's Heart, Bluegrass and Muddy Waters, P.O. Box 357, Benton, KY 42025.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at the Life Celebration Center of Filbeck-Cann, 1003 Poplar Street, Benton, Kentucky 42025.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at the Life Celebration Center of Filbeck-Cann with Pastor Dawn Choate officiating. Burial will follow at Peck Cemetery.

In Memory Of

Stanley Noel Anderson, 67, of Benton, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at his place of residence.

Stanley was born on August 10, 1958, to the late Alton and Doris Holley Anderson in Murray, Kentucky. He was a paramedic for 34 years for the Marshall County Ambulance Service, from which he retired. He was a man with many irons in the fire, always staying busy. After his retirement, he began a new career as a carpenter for Shawnee Steam Plant. He was also a cattle farmer for many years and perfected the skill of brick masonry. There wasn’t anything, it seems, he couldn’t do.

Stanley reminisced on the “old days” and had great nostalgia for the times when the world moved at a slower pace, gas was fifty cents a gallon, and technology wasn’t really a thing. He loved gardening and planned his garden meticulously every Spring. His greatest love above all else, though, was his grandchildren.

Stanley is survived by one daughter, Ashley Anderson of Benton; two sisters, Angela Powell and Libby Steele, both of Benton; one brother, Terry Anderson of Benton; two grandchildren, Eric Saxton and Alissa Saxton; one great-grandson, Brewer Noel; and the love of his life, Joyce Holder.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Phillip Anderson; and his parents, Alton and Doris Holley Anderson.

In Memory Of

James Allan Francis, 44, of Calvert City, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at his place of residence.

James was born on September 12, 1981, in Flint, Michigan. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army, 11 Bravo Infantry, with two tours in Iraq, a three-star deployment ribbon, and a nomination for Drill Sergeant of the Year in 2012. He always had a thirst for knowledge and, from childhood on, loved to tinker with mechanics. His handy abilities led him to become a Master Pipe Fitter in the Union after his military service. He was a garage scientist who aspired to build hydrogen generators and find alternative fuel methods for vehicles in his free time.

He was strong-willed and steadfast in his beliefs, but also known for his wonderful sense of humor. Along with the sense of humor, there was also a bit of a philosopher within. James found inspiration in one specific poem by William Ernest Henley, called Invictus. The rallying words of this poem motivated him through the toughest times in his life. “It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul,” and James always continued on.

James is survived by two sons, Gabriel Invictus Francis and James Michael Francis, both of Clarksville, Tennessee; his mother, Peggy Turner Francis of Michigan; three sisters, Rachel Francis, Kendra Francis, and Angie Scripter, all of Michigan; and one brother, Adam Francis of Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by one infant brother, James Andrew Francis; and his father, James Kenneth Francis.
