The City of Benton is proud to announce that Stephanie Jones, Director of Parks and Recreation, has been named the 2025 Arkansas Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) Professional of the Year.

This prestigious honor recognizes outstanding leadership, innovation, and service in the field of parks and recreation.
Stephanie’s selection is a reflection of her unwavering dedication, transformative leadership, and visionary approach to public recreation. Over the course of her career, she has risen through the ranks of Benton’s Parks and Recreation Department, ultimately becoming Director—a role in which she has redefined what’s possible for municipal recreation across Arkansas.

"Stephanie is more than a director—she is a collaborator, a problem solver, and a community builder," said Judd Hart, Chairperson of the Parks and Recreation Committee and member of the Benton City Council. "I’ve had the distinct privilege of working alongside her for the past decade, and I can say with confidence that her impact on our city is nothing short of extraordinary."

Under Stephanie’s leadership, Benton’s Parks and Recreation Department has grown from a modest operation into one of the most innovative and respected in the region. She has overseen a dramatic expansion in programming, including a wide range of inclusive and adaptive recreation opportunities. Her commitment to accessibility has resulted in parks, trails, and sports programs that serve individuals of all abilities, helping to create a more connected and equitable community.

This one-of-a-kind amenity not only boosts local tourism and economic development but also cements Benton’s reputation as a leader in outdoor recreation.

Stephanie is known for her ability to work seamlessly with city departments, community organizations, and state agencies, consistently delivering high-impact outcomes while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Her leadership style—marked by integrity, collaboration, and a deep passion for improving lives—sets a powerful example in public service.

Over the past decade, Benton Parks and Recreation has significantly expanded its programming and special events. Gone are the days when youth softball was the department’s sole offering. Today, the department offers more than 50 programs—and continues to grow—including one of its largest and most successful programs: Youth Track & Field.

In 2015, the Parks Department partnered with Benton Panthers Athletics to establish a shared facilities agreement. This partnership enabled the department to utilize the Benton High School Athletic Complex, including the track and football field, for the Youth Track & Field program.

When the program launched in 2015, it had just 18 participants. Since then, it has experienced steady and impressive growth:
• 2018: 96 participants
• 2021: 127 participants
• 2025: 198 participants

This growth reflects the community’s increasing interest in recreational opportunities and highlights the department’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality programming for youth in Benton. In recognition of the program’s outstanding success and impact, Benton Parks and Recreation was honored with the 2025 Arkansas Recreation and Parks Association Sports Management Programming Excellence Award—a testament to the department’s dedication to innovation, collaboration, and excellence in youth sports programming.

“This program wouldn’t be possible without our Recreation Manager, Ryan Grist,” said Parks Director Stephanie Jones. “He has completely elevated this grassroots program. I could not be more proud of Ryan and his team.”

Family-owned and operated since 2008, Saline River Canoe began as a hobby and has since grown into a thriving, community-supported business. Over the years, it's been inspiring to witness both locals and visitors alike discover and enjoy the beauty of the Saline River in the heart of Benton.

With growth has come a strong focus on preservation and education. Saline River Canoe organizes several annual river cleanups, made possible through collaboration with groups such as Friends of the Saline , Benton Parks and Recreation, Recycle Saline, Saline River Watershed Alliance, Arkie Travels, the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, and ACCBOATR. These efforts reflect a shared love and commitment to preserving the health and beauty of the Saline River.

On Thursday night, Michael and Tonya Sacomani were honored with the 2025 Arkansas Recreation and Parks Association Award for Champion Team of the Year!

This well-deserved recognition celebrates their dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Saline River and our community.

Congratulations, Michael and Tonya! Your passion continues to inspire us all.
