Total shoulder replacement, also referred to as shoulder arthroplasty, is when a surgeon removes the ends of the two bones that make up the shoulder joint and replaces them with artificial parts. Total shoulder replacement is typically performed when a patient has not responded well to more conservative treatments The two common types of total shoulder replacements are a total shoulder and reverse total shoulder replacement. With a traditional total shoulder replacement the ball and socket remain in their original position. With a reverse total shoulder replacement, the ball and socket portions of the shoulder are reversed. Physical therapists play a key role both before and after surgery. Prior to surgery, physical therapy can help patients improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility to promote a better outcome following surgery. After surgery, physical therapists will work to restore range of motion, manage pain, improve strength, and increase functional ability. Contact your local Baptist Therapy Center to see how we can help you!

05/01/2025

A total hip replacement, also known as a total hip arthroplasty (THA), is a surgical procedure in which damaged bone and cartilage is removed from the hip and replaced with prosthetic components. A patient most often undergoes a THA due to severe and progressive osteoarthritis, although trauma and avascular necrosis are common reasons as well. Once the replacement has been decided on and completed, the orthopedic surgeon will likely request for physical therapy to begin soon after. Immediately following surgery, physical therapy emphasis will include decreasing swelling, safe transfers and ambulation, and adherence to post-surgical precautions. As healing progresses, more advanced mobility and strengthening can take place. The THA can be a highly successful surgery, and patients who undergo the surgery can expect a safe return to walking, biking, and other low impact activities. If you have had a total hip replacement, or have plans to have one done soon, consider Baptist Health for your outpatient physical therapy services!

April is National Occupational Therapy month! Many people may not know what an occupational therapist, or OT, actually does. An OT can play a role in populations from birth to seniors. They focus on helping people return to daily activities that include, but are not limited to, self care, work, school, and recreational activities. Occupational therapists work with people that may have pain or limitations from a variety of conditions that may include arthritis, strokes, work related injuries, sports injuries, and surgeries and more. At Baptist Health, occupational therapists play an integral role in patient recovery in a variety of settings including acute care, inpatient rehab, long term acute care, home health, and outpatient. In the outpatient setting, OTs specialize in orthopedic and post surgical recovery of the elbow, wrist, and hand along with making splints. From self care tasks like bathing and dressing to higher level activities like playing sports, occupational therapists use creative and innovative treatment ideas to help people return to a wide variety of activities. The OT staff at Baptist health are dedicated to helping our patients achieve the most functional and independent life they can.

03/04/2025

A total knee replacement, or TKA, is one of the most commonly performed and successful surgeries performed in medicine. A TKA is warranted for patients with progressive and debilitating knee pain that may be caused by arthritis, fracture, or disease. Prior to surgery patients often report knee stiffness, swelling, night pain, and painful weight bearing. The knee replacement surgery involves removing damaged portions of the bone and replacing them with artificial parts. Physical therapy plays a crucial role following a TKA procedure. Physical therapy emphasis will include increasing ROM, decreasing swelling, and return of strength and proper walking mechanics. Whether you have just had a knee replacement, or plan to have one in the future, your local Baptist Health Physical Therapy clinic is ready to help you recover!

A stroke happens when a broken vessel or blood clot prevents blood from getting to the brain. Factors that increase your risk for a stroke include physical inactivity, heavy drinking, smoking, cardiovascular disease, and other medical conditions. Effects of a stroke vary greatly and can include upper and lower extremity deficits, speech difficulties and cognition problems. Following a stroke, it is crucial to begin stroke rehab to regain abilities you had before or to adjust to new disabilities. A typical stroke rehab journey may include 2-3 weeks of intensive inpatient rehab, with eventual return home and initiation of outpatient rehab. Therapy services will play an important role in both of these steps. Inpatient rehabilitation may include a combination of physical, occupational, and speech therapy, with multiple hours of therapy a day focused on mobility, self-care skills, and communication. A physical therapist may help you practice safe transfers between surfaces, while an occupational therapist may assist with feeding and dressing. Outpatient therapy will aim to progress inpatient rehab gains, helping patients improve safe transfers, strength, and overall independence. A number of Baptist Health Therapy Centers are staffed with a strong combination of physical, occupational, and speech therapists ready to help you get on the road to recovery; contact your local clinic today to see how we can help you on your stroke rehab journey!

01/21/2025

Lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is an overuse injury of the lateral elbow musculature. This injury typically occurs with repeated overuse of the wrist extensor muscles; activities that may cause this include painting, hand tool use, gardening, and, as the name suggests, tennis. A patient presenting with tennis elbow will often have pain with wrist and elbow movement, as well as difficulty with gripping objects and potential decreases in range of motion. Imaging is often used to rule out other injuries, rather than rule tennis elbow in; rather, a diagnosis usually relates to history and manual testing. Once a diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis is confirmed, an initial treatment plan consists of rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Physical or occupational therapy may be prescribed to initiate stretching, strengthening, and pain treatment. A therapist can also help identify activity modifications, and educate on appropriate timing for return to exercise. Contact your local Baptist Health Therapy Center for help with tennis elbow treatment!
