Struggling with allowing yourself to be a priority, especially as you’re working towards healthy changes can be a major obstacle. Many times we’re become accustomed to caring for everyone else and deprioritizing our own needs, so of course shifting the focus to ourselves can feel odd, uncomfortable, or at times “selfish.” These feelings are valid and only further reinforce the importance of beginning to recognize this pattern so we can first start to become aware of our own needs and then work to allow ourselves time and space to begin addressing them. This is a shift that often takes time and practice, but it is most definitely worth it…and so are you! 🤍

Tis the season for setting goals! If you’ve set goals for the New Year or have goals you’ve been kicking around, remember to pause and be clear about these two things: WHY is this goal important to you (and you probably need to ask a few times, as the first answer may not go deep enough), and how does this goal align with your core values (more on this soon!).

Knowing your WHY and more importantly, recognizing how this why connects with the values that are most important to you, creates the path that guides progress.

And MINDING Health is here to help! With content to help you get clear about your why, and remind you of this why when you need it most, MINDING Health helps you finally make progress towards your goals!

While the holiday season can bring lots of joy, it also often comes with stress, ever expanding to-do lists, sometimes grief, lack of routine and feeing overwhelmed.

If you’re struggling, know that you are most definitely not alone 🤍 And while there is no easy or quick fix for holiday stress, taking a moment to breathe and be present for a single moment, and trying to let go (even just a little) of striving for perfection can help.

Lastly, when we’re stressed and out of routine is often the last time we think about our health goals (well, except for feeling guilty, beating ourselves up for not focusing on our health, or deciding we’ll start fresh in the new year..). That’s why step 4 is “choose an anchor”—one small behavior that helps “anchor” you to your health goals and holds your place of valuing your health while you might drift around a bit through this busy season. Choose to drink plenty of water, move around a bit more through the day, choose to stop eating when you’re full or decide not to snack in front of the TV if you’re not hungry. Anything that you can be intentional about, that supports your health goals, and that helps hold your place while also allowing you to enjoy the holidays in ways that are important and meaningful for you.

Wishing you all a blessed holiday season and looking forward to an amazing New Year! 🤍🤍

OK, the definition I chose might seem silly at first glance, but stay with me. I’ve read lots of definitions of health over time and there are many I really like (for example, the World Health Organization has a good one). But, ultimately, most of the “text book style” definitions leave me feeling like I’m striving for something unattainable.

In contrast, each time I consider health defined as “related to whole,” I feel a softening, as if my body knows what it means to consider feeling “whole,” it understands health as whole, and more importantly, it feels compelled to move towards that wholeness.

That’s what I mean by choosing a definition that’s meaningful for you. Something that resonates and pulls you towards it.

It doesn’t mean that the definition here is the best one, the right one, or the one you *should* choose. This one may not feel meaningful to you at all (and it may still sound silly!). That’s ok!

MINDING Health is not a one size fits all approach to health. We’re here to help you decide what is important to you, and then to help you work towards that.

So, take a minute and consider what YOUR meaningful definition of health is (and it doesn’t need to be something you can find in a Google search—it might be far more individualized or personal than that; even better!).

I’d love to hear your thoughts and the definitions that resonate for you; feel free to share in the comments!

I’ve honestly lost count of how many times patients have told me this over the years as they’ve reflected on their progress with healthy changes.

As a psychologist, I’ve always responded with a resounding, YES! After all, the “ninety percent mental” portion is my wheelhouse, and I feel constantly reminded of the fact that how we think and feel influences how we behave.

But, it took me awhile to realize the full significance of these comments. Specifically, that the vast majority of options available to help people make healthy changes focus almost exclusively on the “ten percent physical” side while neglecting the “ninety percent mental” part.

That’s where MINDING Health comes in. It is specifically designed to fill this gap and uses strategies to help support success by addressing all the mental, emotional and psychological factors embedded in the journey towards healthier living.
