When life throws tough experiences your way, it can dim your shine. It can make it hard for you to see your own worth, eroding your self-trust.

Left unaddressed, trauma has a way of sneaking up on us and creating a whole host of difficulties, for ourselves, our relationships, and our families. Trauma can make it hard to see that inner, unapologetically dope you.

So how can The People Place help? Counseling can help you to come to terms with your experiences and learn to take back your power over your present reality, leaving past experiences where they belong, in your past.

Therapy for difficult life experiences at The People Place can help you rediscover your self-worth. You will always have worth in this world, no matter what you’ve been through, and we at The People Place are ready to help you find.

Setting boundaries can be tough!

When you set boundaries, state them clearly, and remove yourself from situations where they’re violated, you are showing yourself respect. But what many don’t realize is, you’re showing respect to others too! When you show and tell people how to treat you, you offer them the respect of trusting and encouraging them to do the right thing for you.

The people who care about you will embrace the chance to treat you right, because the people that care about you want to know how to do that in a way that feels right for you.

That said, not everyone receives boundaries well. The people in your life who benefit the most from you lacking boundaries will be the first ones to pipe up and complain when you set and enforce boundaries, but that criticism only serves them, not you. If they fail to respect your boundaries, that’s on them.

If you’re struggling to tell the people around you what your boundaries are, working with a counselor at The People Place can be a great space to decide what you’ll say, and practice setting boundaries in a safe space before you debut this new, self-assured you in your everyday life. What is somatic therapy? At The People Place, several of our counselors incorporate the release and rebuilding of somatic therapy into their work with clients.

Somatic therapy focuses on the mind's connection to the body. Your body is the starting point, and in somatic therapy you will learn to recognize and release stored feelings and traumas. Your therapist will help you understand where emotions show up in your body, especially when remembering traumatic events. From there, they’ll help you release that stored emotion, reducing the impact of traumatic memories through building a stronger mind-body connection.

Somatic therapy incorporates movement, breathwork, grounding, vocal exercises, and more, all to help you recognize and release stored emotion. To learn more about the therapy modalities available at The People Place, visit our website!

Grief can feel a lot bigger during the holiday season. Complicated feelings, stark reminders of losses, and a demand to be cheerful when you’re feeling anything but jolly can make this season hard.

When you’re grieving during the holidays, it’s a good idea to give yourself grace.

If you’re up for big festive celebrations, but feeling guilty about enjoying yourself, give yourself permission to embrace the season despite that guilt.

If you’re feeling like festivities are too much for you, honor that feeling and take a step back. Don’t let grief overwhelm you and cut you off from living, but pay attention to your needs. If you need quiet, give yourself permission to embrace a low-key holiday season.

If you’re feeling like grief is too much to carry alone, a counselor who is ready to support you no matter how your grief shows up can be a huge help for bearing, and sharing, the burden of grieving.
