“Clutter isn’t a sign of laziness — it often happens when life’s demands outpace our mental capacity.” — Dr. Stephanie Steele-Wren, PsyD.

🧠 She explains to Real Simple that when your brain is overloaded, your space can start to feel neglected — not because you don’t care, but because you simply don’t have the emotional bandwidth to keep up.

📍 Clutter increases cognitive load, meaning your brain has to constantly process everything around you, which can drain focus and energy.

🌪️ For some people, especially those who are more sensitive or neurodivergent, clutter creates sensory chaos that makes it harder to rest or transition between tasks.

💛 Her big takeaway? Clutter is a sign of mental overload, not a character flaw — and creating a space that soothes rather than stresses you, matters more than perfection.

🧠 Neurodivergent Time Perception & the End of the Year — Fast Facts “Last-minute mode” may be the brain’s natural workflow.
ADHD brains, especially, may not feel time urgency until the deadline is close enough to trigger dopamine
Emotional time perception changes too.
Reflection, pressure, or expectations can alter the sense of how fast or slow time moves.
The end of the year can feel like “all or nothing.”
Neurodivergent brains often operate in intensity cycles—making December feel like either a productivity sprint or a shutdown phase.

✨ The Social Hangover Is Real ✨
For many neurodivergent people, social gatherings can be both meaningful and exhausting. Even when you enjoy the company, your brain might be working overtime — reading cues, managing sensory input, masking, shifting topics, or navigating group dynamics.
🧠 Recharging isn't avoiding — it's regulating.

Here are ways to help:
🌿 Quiet alone time
🎧 Noise-free or noise-controlled space
📝 Journaling to process the experience
🔌 Logging off from messages for a bit

How do you recharge after social time?

The holiday season can be a lot — sensory overload, disrupted routines, social expectations, and endless to-dos. If this time of year feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. Here are a few Neurodivergent-friendly strategies to help you navigate the season with more comfort and less stress:
🧠 1. Create Your Sensory Safe Zone
Bring noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, sunglasses, or anything that helps regulate sensory input. Give yourself permission to take breaks.
🗓️ 2. Protect Your Routines
Even small pieces of your normal routine — sleep, meals, movement — can help anchor your nervous system when the schedule gets chaotic.
💬 3. Set Communication Boundaries
You don’t have to attend every event or participate in every conversation. “I need a moment,” “I’m stepping away,” or “I’m not up for that today” are valid.
🎁 4. Gift-Giving Your Way
If picking gifts is stressful, use wish lists, repeatable gifts, donations, or experience-based gifts. It’s about thoughtfulness, not perfection.
🍽️ 5. Navigate Food Stress Compassionately
Whether you have sensory food sensitivities or executive function challenges, allow yourself to eat what feels safe and comfortable. No guilt.
💖 6. Prioritize Your Energy
If you have limited spoons, spend them intentionally. Choose the events or people who help you feel safe, supported, or joyful.
✨ Most importantly:
Your needs are real, your boundaries are valid, and you deserve a holiday season that doesn’t drain you.
