After 3 years, I’m officially official. “Somatic Experiencing:
A technique developed that focuses on releasing trapped trauma through gentle movements and awareness. … By working with the body, somatic therapy can help individuals:
Release emotional tension and trauma, improve body awareness and connection, gain insight into the relationship between mind and body, develop healthier coping mechanisms, and enhance overall well-being.” It’s a journey worth beginning.

20 years of hearing the people you love most hurt, belittle, ignore, attack, and basically hate each other is far worse than recovering from those people divorcing & living apart.

Divorce carries a heavy stigma. And societal wisdom preaches “staying together for the kids.”

I believe marriage (especially a healthy marriage with mutual respect) is one of the most beautiful and important thing one can have. And witnessing this growing up quite literally sets a child up for: ideal physical health, brain development, better problem solving, higher self with, and the ability to emotional regulate.

My own marriage is something I value more than anything else.

But as a marriage therapist, if there is one thing I’ve learned is: sometimes separation is absolutely the healthiest option.

This post will hopefully reach the people it’s meant for. I know there’s shame and a sense of “failure”— and sometimes that runs deeper when children are involved. Sometimes people judge and say things that can cause doubt.

But, sometimes this painful choice is a gift to everyone involved. Sometimes, it sends a clear message that you’re finally choosing you. And that your children will no longer get modeling that you are to stay and accept abuse or mistreatment.

The harsh truth is: not everyone is willing to work on their marriage. On themselves. Some people would rather stay in the comfortable familiar of who they are and they expect their partner to just accept it.

Sometimes, the heartbreaking choice is the best one for the entire family unit.
