The Bentonville Fire Department reminds you that fuel pump fires are a serious hazard, but can be mitigated with proper safety precautions. If a fire occurs while refueling, the most important action is to not remove the nozzle. Instead, immediately back away from the pump, notify the attendant (or activate the emergency shut-off if unattended), and call for help.
During the five-year period of 2014 through 2018, local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 4,150 fires in or on service or gas station properties per year. These fires caused an annual average of three civilian deaths, 43 civilian fire injuries, and $30 million in direct property damage.
General fuel pump safety:
• Turn off the engine: Always turn off the vehicle's engine before refueling.
• Avoid distractions: Do not use cell phones or engage in other activities that can divert your attention while refueling.
• Do not smoke.
• Discharge static electricity: Before removing the nozzle, discharge any static electricity buildup by touching a metal part of the vehicle away from the fill pipe.
• Don't overfill: Avoid topping off the tank, as this can cause spills and increase the risk of fire.
• Never allow children to refuel: Only adults should be responsible for refueling.
• Report any spills: If a spill occurs, immediately report it to the station attendant.
