Last but certainly not least, we’re proud to highlight Candace Ward — our Director of Nursing whose heart, resilience, and joy make her a cornerstone of The Meadows family.
Candace found her way to The Meadows after more than a decade of encouragement from her friend Megan — and when a last-minute nursing need came up during COVID, she stepped in. It only took one shift for everyone to know she was meant to be here. For Candace, the decision was just as clear. The Meadows felt like home — a family-run place with a deep sense of connection.
A Virginia native, Candace grew up in a Christian children’s home in Oklahoma. She remembers it as a loving place full of great people (and yes, she swears she walked uphill both ways in the snow to school!). She was a talented athlete, excelling in volleyball, basketball, and track — where she even held a state record in discus!
Candace began her healthcare journey early, becoming a CNA at just 16. Though she originally considered sports medicine or physical therapy, life led her to nursing — a path inspired in part by watching her high school sweetheart and first love battle cancer. She became a nurse at 19 and has now been in the profession for 23 years, with every step fueled by a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
Her love for The Meadows runs deep — not only because of the values it represents, but because it allows her to live her own with balance. “Being a mom is my first priority,” she says, “and working here makes that possible.” She also takes pride in honoring the legacy of Mr. Bathke and carrying forward a tradition of compassionate care.
Candace is mom to a 19-year-old son who works at Walmart, a 6-year-old daughter who’s about to graduate kindergarten, and two bonus children from a previous relationship. Both of her children were born as micropremies, weighing just over one pound, and today are thriving walking miracles. She’s also recently begun a relationship with a wonderful man and surrounds herself with an amazing tribe of chosen family and friends.
On her days off, you’ll find Candace soaking up time with her kids, camping, kayaking, foraging, and cruising in the Jeep with the top off. She’s newly into pickleball, riding her e-bike, and has even taken up golfing. Her love for music — especially live shows — runs deep, and one song that holds special meaning to her is “Linda James” by Nicholas Jamerson & The Morning Jays, which reminds her to live with love, gratitude, and light.
A proud Dolly Parton fan, Candace lives by her wisdom — especially these gems:“If you see someone without a smile today, give ‘em yours.”“I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence.”“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”
Candace, thank you for your fierce dedication, the strength you bring to our team, and the love you pour into everything you do. You remind us all to “keep it in the family” — and we’re so lucky to be part of yours.
