A few years ago, we had to stop ADHD meds because of the dangerous side effects our son was experiencing. I wish I had been better informed about the options, because, if given the chance I would have never medicated him for ADHD in the first place and would have chosen Neuroptimal Neurofeedback EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

In a small study of 40 children with ADHD, teachers and parents reported that patients undergoing neurofeedback treatment experienced a decrease in inattention similar to that of patients taking me…

Neuroptimal Neurofeedback is an AMAZING tool, but it’s just one facet of improving your wellbeing. Check out this easy read on how making a few simple diet additions can improve brain health. #2, 3, and 7 are my favorites 🍫🍓🥑

The diet can have a significant impact on the brain's function. A brain-healthy diet, rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, can boost memory and learning while staving off neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease. Here, we look at the evidence for some of the best brain foods...

This one is for my COUNSELOR, PSYCHOLOGIST, and THERAPIST friends- is NeurOptimal a piece of the puzzle you might be missing to help your clients find success?
🏋🏼‍♀️Steve Hamming knows performance. According to a recent Crossfit competition, the Michigan psychotherapist is the “Fittest 55-59 Year Old in America”. Hamming is not a dabbler or a dilettante. He craves metrics and demands results. And that carries over to his psychotherapy practice.

Recently, when he decided to join forces with NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback trainer Molly Raaymakers, Hamming did so with the hope that he could add an additional dimension to his traditional talk therapy practice. After all, what is cross-training, but an approach to physical fitness that incorporates multiple, diverse training strategies? Logically, the brain could be “cross-trained” just like the body for best results.

BRAIN TRAINING AS CROSS-TRAINING FOR THE BRAIN
Hamming was optimistic at the outset of this new direction in his practice, but obviously, the proof would be in the results. What exactly would happen with those clients who bolstered their regular talk therapy sessions with neurofeedback training sessions? Would patients show levels of improvement uncharacteristic of traditional psychotherapy? Would specific complaints make a difference in the effectiveness of dual training? Would a person suffering from say, memory issues, be more or less successful than a client grappling with anxiety?

Below is a peek at a recent email Hamming sent to NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback designer and co-founder Dr. Valdeane Brown. Sent just six months into the merger of he and Raaymakers’ practices, Hamming describes “eye-opening” results after fortifying traditional talk therapy with neurofeeback brain training.

EMAIL TO NEUROPTIMAL® NEUROFEEBACK FOUNDER VALDEAN BROWN
My reasons for moving forward and merging my traditional psychotherapy practice with Molly’s [Raaymakers] NeurOptimal® practice? It ignited a sense of hope that there was something more we could offer to clients to move them forward gracefully at a more client-efficient pace. I was also intrigued by what it may offer for my fellow competitors-be they athletes or executives since both roles are quite parallel.

What I’ve experienced after 6 months of use with my long standing clientele has been eye opening. I’m a classically trained Psychologist, specifically trained to create long term therapy relationships with clients for very in depth emotional healing. I’ve seen many of my clients for 10+ years with this long term psychotherapy model, and within the last 6 months of adding NeurOptimal® to their care my clients are experiencing these impressive transformations that hadn’t occurred in those earlier years. Some of the vast clinical benefits for clients I’ve tracked are people are much more relaxed overall within their lives, decreased anxiety and increased ability to manage stressors, increased ability to focus & concentrate, increased memory abilities even on clients with histories of prior closed head injury that hadn’t prior to this been able to restore their state of memory, clients are more decisive and clearer in their problem solving abilities, they are less edgy and report a great reduction in “yips” across their day to day living. There is an increase in client’s intuitive knowing that may be difficult to measure yet per observation it’s definitely occurring for these clients.

Sincerely,
Steven G. Hamming

“I had an opportunity to undergo a dynamic neurofeedback system to help jumpstart my brain/mind.

When I was first introduced to NeurOptimal, I was a bit sceptical on the idea – “how does it work?”, or “will this have any side effects on my brain?”, etc. But, I decided to give it a shot anyways.

Today is my 4th session, and I can feel some effects on my body and mind. I’m feeling calmer, relaxed and generally having a productive practice day (most of the time).

I also find myself having an early deep sleep.

I’m looking forward for my upcoming sessions, and hopefully this will improve on my performance on the field.”

Anxiety Girl: How Neurofeedback Helped Me Regain My Sanity
neurofeedback for anxietyWhen I first started working in Hollywood, a producer told me that an artist’s personal demons are always reflected in what you see on screen. Scorsese played out his Catholic guilt. Woody Allen gave us his New York neurosis. Hitchcock was claustrophobic. See if you can guess what weighs heavily on my mind:

One of my first screenplays was a contemporary version of Alice in Wonderland set in L.A.. “Alice” is lured by a rock star (The Rabbit) to a sleazy motel where he has s*x with her, then bolts in the middle of the night. Next, an 18-wheeler crashes through the wall of the motel, nearly turning Alice into road kill. Among the debris she finds a postcard of a girl – who looks just like her – falling through the middle of the earth with a look of terror on her face.

Along with abandonment, a fear of driving and vertigo, any Jungian dream analyst worth his $350 an hour would pigeonhole my “condition” as Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Kind of covers all those terrors expressed in my screenplay, doesn’t it? GAD -as it is known- is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable, often irrational anxiety about everyday things disproportionate to the actual source of worry. My friends laugh whenever I quip, “Oh it’s hard to be me”. But ask any anxiety ju**ie and they’ll tell you: catastrophic thinking is kind of like shoveling coal in the bowels of a steam ship: it’s a relentless, sweaty, full time gig.

And the better things get, the more my anxiety meter ticks north. Find the love of your life? Check. Marry at the same place Jackie O. honeymooned? Check. Find success in a career you’re passionate about? Check. Give birth to beautiful baby boy? Check. Well, duh! Of course everything is doomed to go south at any moment without warning!

I was first diagnosed with GAD eight years ago when my son was born, but I’m pretty sure I’ve suffered from the disorder my entire life. Instead of postpartum depression, I had (severe) postpartum anxiety. What finally drove me to the doctor’s office was my meltdown over the potential for lead poisoning in our newly purchased Pasadena Craftsman bungalow (built 1910). I convinced myself that our newborn was going to have brain damage if I didn’t scrape and repaint every inch of that house. Even after I sanded, sealed and painted (twice!) every surface, the sense of impending doom didn’t disappear. At one point, I remember sliding down my freshly painted bedroom wall; crying hysterically. That was my husband’s cue to exclaim, “I think it’s time to consider medication.”

Three weeks later, I was on anti-depressants/anti-anxiety meds. That was NOT an easy decision because it meant I had to stop breastfeeding. And that triggered a whole new repertoire of catastrophic thoughts, like: “Will my son get the best nutrients? (yes). IS formula bad for him? (no) Will he not be as smart? (Big “no”. FYI: he now tests as “gifted”).

My BPP (Blue Pill Period) lasted about 18 months. I stopped taking meds because they made me sleep all day and crave more carbs (the objective was to shed, not re-gain 65 lbs. of “baby weight”). But it wasn’t until a few years later that someone introduced me to NeurOptimal neurofeedback for anxiety. Now THAT was my own personal Jesus, I mean, savior! Naturopathic? Check. No freaky side effects? Check. No pig-out inducing appetite stimulation? BIG check. (Hey, I’m under five feet tall. 5 lbs. is like 50 on everyone else). I was skeptical, but the first night after I ran a session, I slept like a baby. Can I just comment here…why does everyone use that metaphor? What baby sleeps soundly through the night? Let’s say, I slept like my hounds after an all uphill canyon hike. I had intense, technicolor dreams. I woke up completely rested and relaxed.

After a few more neurofeedback sessions, pesky catastrophic thoughts didn’t even enter my mind. Even in the face of some pretty heavy external stressors, the Neuroptimal brain training kept my knee-jerk panic at bay. A few months ago, my BF had her breast cancer return and it is now in her bones. In a matter of months, she went from cancer-free to fighting for her life. While I comforted her on the outside; inside I was in the midst of a 100% Code Blue Breakdown. Of course, I was concerned about her, but it also relit the fuse of my own health fears.

Over the next few weeks, I stuck to a very strict training schedule, making sure I ran my neurofeedback training consistently. What happened as a result was -quite literally- mind blowing. I continued to sleep soundly. When I woke up I was calm. Intense feelings about my friend’s cancer – even suffocating pressure from work and clients – were totally manageable. Fear of death. Gone.

But the ultimate test was “the meeting.” Last month, my husband and I had a business lunch with a film producer in West Hollywood who was casting one of our scripts. This was the kind of event that typically pushed my anxiety buttons – hard. Hollywood lunches are kind of like Japanese business meetings: “no” means “maybe”; “maybe” means “yes” and no one knows what “yes” means. Not exactly stable ground if you’ve worried about free-falling through the center of the earth most of your life(!). But amazingly, I enjoyed myself in this meeting. I felt no pressure; only calm. I was clear-headed and focused. It was as if all those EEG biofeedback sessions with my neurofeedback machine melted away the overwhelming anxiety that had such a stranglehold on my psyche. I’ve never felt like I was standing on such solid ground.

Now, anxiety has been a part of my personality and my artistry for a long time. It’s actually a good thing to acknowledge your anxiety and express it through art. What’s bad is living with neurosis day to day and allowing it to destroy your joy and peace of mind. That was my hangout before neurofeedback.

P.S.: While I went to hell and back, my BF went to Mexico on a yoga retreat. She came back de-stressed and full of life and her prognosis is extremely positive.

I’m Carrie Schweer, mom to 2 precious kiddos and 2 fur babies.
Here’s my story: God placed this in my lap and I couldn’t be more excited. So here’s the backstory: Desperate times call for desperate measures. The Doctor who manages Matthews ADHD and anxiety meds recommended Neurofeedback because we were at a point that we had exhausted the list of ADHD meds out there (stimulant and non stimulant) and had already done genetic testing over the years to see how he metabolized them and why he wasn’t able to use them without serious side effects such as a racing heart beat at rest (like 200-240 bpm fast), even on a non-stimulant and rebound at the end of the day with stimulants. They worked during the day for attention, focus and decreasing his hyperactivity, but had such negative side effects that it wasn’t worth being on them and continuing to put his body through the harsh symptoms. In my research, Neurofeedback was the number one recommended first line of defense for ADHD treatment according to American Academy of Pediatricians. Who knew?!?! I sure didn’t way back when when we were putting him on meds in kindergarten. I found that there were two types of Neurofeedback out there, the old-school way of “linear neurofeedback” and the newest and safest technology “non-linear Neurofeedback” which was created to combat the issues and often serious side effects associated with the old school linear style neurofeedback.
After searching, I felt that the newer technology was the best fit for Matthew with his multiple diagnoses. I then was disheartened to find out the closest office for him to receive a training session was Tulsa, Little Rock or Kansas City. That was disheartening to say the least. I then called the company, Zengar in Canada to ask if they ever rent out units for home use. They created a superior nonlinear form of Neurofeedback software, called NeurOptimal. They were awesome and pointed me in the right direction. I talked to someone in Alabama and although all of her units were already rented out, she referred me to her friend in Texas and on April 10 we received our first Neuroptimal unit to rent for the month. It was a chunk of change, but when you have exhausted all known resources and want your child to stop coming home in tears every day because he feels so stupid and kids make fun of him and he begs to go back on ADHD meds because he felt so much smarter when he was on them and kids didn’t make fun of him, you suck it up and you rent the machine and you have a little faith. Fast-forward two days in and two training sessions later for Matthew, my mom was taking him to volunteer at one of their regular spots around town and she said she noticed how much more eye contact he was making with everybody and how he was having conversations with everybody and was starting to function a little bit more independently with volunteering tasks, which she usually had had to help him every step of the way with because he would get so distracted. I also started training sessions at the same time as him. Fast forward two weeks in, his emotional stability was much more stable and calm and his confidence was increasing and he was laughing and smiling 99% of the time. I was calmer, less easily irritated, way more focused and just overall more upbeat and optimistic. Fast forward again to the end of our month rental, he was doing so much more independently and able to complete tasks without help nor redirection, his focus had increased dramatically and mood was much more stabilized. Gone were the days of the teary-eyed boy at the end of the day, frustrated with life and ready to give up. I, too, had been able to go off of my ADHD med and anxiety med, which before if I missed a day of my Strattera, non-stimulant, I was sick by mid morning and down for the count. It never failed, if I missed a dose, I was miserable with nausea and a migraine. My mom noticed that I was way more focused and outlook on life had turned dramatically turned upward. What I didn’t realize at the time is that I had forgot to fill my Strattera because it was a Sunday and the pharmacy was closed and I never filled it, yet NOT a single side effect and my focus and attention were better than ever. So, thanks to my mom and dad who had seen the dramatic positive changes in both Matthew and I with their own eyes, They were willing to help me purchase a unit to have permanently in the home. But it was hard to stop at that, I just knew that I wanted to share it with everyone I knew and friends I hadn’t yet met. I wasn’t for sure about how to do this type of Business. I’m an SLP in the schools and my experience in the business world has been network marketing with Plexus, and this business model is neither of those, so I’m learning a lot. My company is called
NWA Neurofeedback. I will officially have my basic and advanced trainer certification as of June 16, and I’m so excited about that. I’m in the process of compiling information for my Facebook business page. I do have an amazing website, logo and business cards thanks to a college bestie, Tilly Gambill, who rocks at graphic design and marketing. My insurance guy, Tony Putnam, is also the bomb diggity. He has answered all of my million questions about owning a business and protecting my investment. I got my three units in last week. I hadn’t even advertised and my first rental was to my Texas bestie and it shipped out the day I received my shipment from the company. That leaves one more rental and then the unit I’m keeping it home to run sessions for NWA peeps and the surrounding areas. The Razorback themed office had a Make over to comfy, cozy and calming. I’ll be posting in the next few days about all of the conditions and symptoms that training with Neuroptimal has had a positive effect on. My company website is www.nwaneurofeedback.com and if you need more information because I know my site is just starting, feel free to also check out the corporate website www.neuroptimal.com.
I’m so excited to share this with everyone. I wanted to make it accessible because I know and have personally experienced how life-changing this technology can be. I know I’m not the only mom out there that has struggled trying to find help for her child. God has been so good and I am now filled with HOPE for all of us.
Thanks to all of my friends who have already jumped right in alongside me offering support and encouragement and have already made referrals. Referrals are the best. Thank you mom Connie Corwin Brown for everything, most of all believing in me and always seeing the potential in Matthew, pouring into him, filling his bucket, and loving him unconditionally. Thanks to Nikki Sopchak and Heather Ponder For being my mentors and answering all of my new B questions with Neuroptimal. And I can’t forget Craig Walker, my mouse call hero, helping this technology challenged chick find her way! 🐭 Thanks to Dereck Farnsworth, Handyman extraordinaire, for getting the last of the cleanup done today from the burst pipe this winter.

If your counseling practice wants to start using Neuroptimal, holler at me. 😊
