Our organization is conducting a research study of an investigational drug for people with major depressive disorder (MDD) who are currently depressed and have used an antidepressant medication without sufficient improvement in their depression symptoms. This study is evaluating the effectiveness of the investigational drug when it is taken with approved antidepressant medication. For many women, an OB-GYN clinician is the physician they see most often. Women often visit their OB-GYN during vulnerable periods of life, including adolescence, pregnancy, postpartum and the menopausal transition, which can trigger bouts of depression or anxiety.

The integration of behavioral health and women’s health care has become more common as OB-GYNs encounter mental health issues that fall outside their specialty. There are opportunities to integrate services and optimize outcomes for women.

THC and Adolescents: An overlooked issue in youth mental health.
Although an epidemic of mental disorders in youth has been widely acknowledged, the role of cannabis has largely been ignored, according to a recent article in Psychiatric Times. Opioid and alcohol use disorders have long been recognized as substantial risks to the adolescent population, but the negative effects of cannabis tend to be overlooked. Although adolescents do not die from cannabis overdoses as they may from op**te overdoses, cannabis presents a significant danger.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the euphoria-inducing cannabinoid in cannabis, is toxic to the adolescent brain, which is not fully developed until the age of 25 years. This toxicity is present even with non-disordered use (cannabis use that does not meet the DSM 5-TR criteria for a substance use disorder) and can lead to increased susceptibility to mental illness. New data suggests more people who use ma*****na experience psychotic episodes. In some cases, particularly in young people, it can lead to permanent psychiatric disorders.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the average THC content found in cannabis has increased from 4% in 1995 to 15% in 2021, with some products advertising THC concentrations up to 90%. As a result, some doctors are urging teens to wait until they’re adults to use cannabis, as it may be safer at that time.
