New Research on a Popular Sugar Substitute
A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology suggests that erythritol — a popular zero-calorie sweetener used in many “sugar-free” drinks and snacks — may have unexpected effects on the cells that line brain blood vessels.
In lab experiments, exposure to erythritol increased oxidative stress, reduced nitric oxide production, and impaired clot-busting activity — all factors tied to vascular health and stroke risk.
While this was a cell study (not in people), the findings raise important questions about how we think about “safe” sugar alternatives.
If you consume erythritol-sweetened products regularly, it might be worth reading labels and staying informed as more research comes out.
