Today is , an annual observance established by the World Federation of Neurology - WFN to raise awareness about brain health and neurological disorders. Practicing good nutrition, reducing risk factors and getting regular check-ups can improve brain health from pre-conception to adulthood.

Dr. Alam Khan with Saint Joseph Medical Group – Neurology in London says “brain health is often equal to our general health. If you have untreated risk factors for poor health, such as depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking or an alcohol use disorder, you are at greater risk for cognitive decline and dementia.”

This World Brain Day, join this important conversation by liking, sharing and leaving a comment below about your favorite way to boost brain health and keep the mind active! We have exciting news at Saint Joseph London! The hospital recently performed its first robotic-assisted bronchoscopy using the ION system, which allows for more precise, minimally invasive lung biopsies. The technology helps pulmonologists reach small, difficult-to-access nodules in the lung with improved accuracy and less risk compared to traditional methods. It also allows patients to get more comprehensive answers, including diagnosis and staging within a single visit, which is especially important in the early detection of lung cancer and treatment.

This is just the latest step in expanding access to advanced diagnostic tools for patients in Laurel County and the surrounding region. To learn more, check out this story in The Lane Report. https://ow.ly/bzbC50WpnoT

Earlier this week, our pulmonology team at Saint Joseph Hospital, led by Eli Colon, MD, completed their first procedure using the ION system, a robotic-assisted platform that allows for more precise, minimally invasive lung biopsies. The procedure helps pulmonologists reach small, hard-to-reach nodules in the lung with improved accuracy and less risk, and allows patients to get faster answers about their lung health.

We were privileged to award $330,420 to eight local nonprofits earlier this year through our Community Health Improvement Grants program. These grants directly improve health equity and wellbeing in our communities, as shown by the impactful work of Refuge for Women Kentucky, a nonprofit helping women overcome human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Thanks to this grant funding, vulnerable women in central Kentucky are better positioned to source safe housing, recover from mental or physical trauma, and live life on their terms.

As part of our mission, we are proud to support local initiatives that improve the health and wellbeing of those we serve, especially the vulnerable. Applications for the Community Health Improvement Program open Monday, July 14 – stay tuned and visit https://ow.ly/se2750WnfHX to learn more and apply.

Fireworks may be in the air, but safety comes first! Before you celebrate the Fourth of July, take a moment to brush up on these important tips to keep your festivities safe and injury-free.

🎆Never let young children handle fireworks and keep a close eye on older kids.
🎆Always wear protective eyewear, even if you’re just watching!
🎆Never light fireworks in your hands, indoors, near people, homes or anything flammable.
🎆Light one at a time and take a big step back, never relight duds!
🎆Soak used and unused fireworks in water before throwing them out.
🎆Keep water or a hose nearby in case of emergency.
🎆Don’t forget: sparklers burn at around 2,000°F – hot enough to melt metal. They cause nearly half of all fireworks injuries in kids under 5. Safer alternatives like glow sticks or confetti poppers can still bring the sparkle without the risk.

We hope everyone has a fun and safe Fourth of July!

Stay safe this summer with vital tips on skin cancer prevention, water safety and heat protection. Taking precautions, such as using sunscreen, staying hydrated, and supervising kids closely around water, can make all the difference.

To protect your skin, use an SPF of 30 or higher and wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and wide-brimmed hats. As always, check for any unusual spots and schedule an annual skin examination with your doctor.

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4 and remains a serious risk for people of all ages. Always supervise children when they are near water, wear a life jacket when boating or swimming in open water, and ensure pools are secured with barriers, like a fence, for safety.

To stay safe in the high summer heat, drink plenty of water throughout the day along with some indoor breaks.

With a little preparation and mindfulness, you and your family can enjoy a safe, active, and healthy summer.
