New technology that is currently available at some breast imaging centers. Awaiting results of study by the American College of Radiology, to determine if contrast enhanced mammography will help to improve detection of early breast cancer, especially in women with extremely dense breasts.

If the patient has a high risk for the development of breast cancer and she cannot get an MRI, she can have contrast and has mammography instead.

A new type of mammogram that has shown promise in clinical trials could detect more potential cancers in women with dense breasts. The radiologist who conducted a trial at the Mayo Clinic shows how the new contrast-enhanced mammograms work. NBC News' Anne Thompson reports.

Great article that cites another study that shows annual screening starting at age 40 saves the most lives.  recommendations are 40 to 79, however if you are living a long life, well into your 90s, and you are in great shape, you should consider continuing screening with mammography.

"I am hoping that primary care physicians see that risks of screening are manageable, and the benefits are tremendous," said Dartmouth's Debra L. Monticciolo, MD.
