What does breast cancer recovery actually look like in physical therapy?

It’s not just rest and stretches—we use targeted exercise to help you rebuild strength, restore mobility, and regain energy for the life you want to live.

In the clinic, we focus on:
💪 Strength – to support muscle growth, function, and support posture
🧘 Mobility – to improve range of motion and function after surgery or radiation
❤️ Conditioning – to combat fatigue and rebuild endurance

Whether you're newly diagnosed or months into survivorship, movement is one of the most powerful tools we have. And it’s never too late to start.

Can you safely exercise with breast cancer–related lymphedema?

Yes—and you should!

Gone are the days of fearing arm use. Research now supports safe, progressive resistance training for managing lymphedema symptoms. Women in a 2009 study by Schmitz et al. actually had fewer flare-ups when they exercised with guidance.

The key?
✅ Start slow
✅ Monitor your arm
✅ Wear compression if advised
✅ Work with a professional trained in lymphedema care
You deserve to feel strong again—without fear.

🇺🇸✨ Today is the Fourth of July—a day meant to celebrate independence, freedom, and the founding ideals of this country.

We want to take a moment to recognize that many of us feel conflicted about what this day represents right now. In a time when basic rights and freedoms feel precarious for many communities, it can be hard to celebrate uncritically.

Our hope today is to reflect honestly on where we are as a country and recommit to the idea of independence, dignity, and justice for all.

Let’s continue to work toward a future where everyone’s rights are protected, where our systems truly serve everyone equally, and where freedom means real safety, opportunity, and choice for every person.

Wishing you a meaningful Fourth of July, however you choose to spend it. ❤️🤍💙

Can you exercise during breast cancer treatment?

Yes—and research shows it’s not only safe, but highly beneficial.

Women who exercised during chemotherapy experienced:
✔️ Less fatigue
✔️ Improved physical function
✔️ Better quality of life

A landmark study by Courneya et al. (2007) found that both aerobic and resistance training during treatment led to significant improvements in energy levels and fitness—with no negative effects. Movement truly is medicine. 💪

Start small, move mindfully, and always get cleared by your oncology team. Working with a cancer-informed PT can help you tailor a safe plan that supports healing.

During pregnancy, your ribcage expands to make room for your growing baby.

The pressure from the uterus pushes up on the diaphragm, and your ribs often widen and lift (aka "flare") to compensate.

Sometimes, this rib flare doesn’t fully resolve postpartum—and that can lead to:
▪️ Upper belly that still sticks out
▪️ Difficulty engaging your core
▪️ Shallow breathing
▪️ Back pain or poor posture

Pelvic floor PT can help by:
✅ Reconnecting you to your breath
✅ Teaching you how to manage pressure
✅ Improving rib mobility and alignment
✅ Supporting your deep core and pelvic floor

You don’t have to just “live with it.” Your body is adaptable—and PT can help guide it back into balance.

Just cleared to exercise postpartum? 🏃‍♀️💥

Your 6-week checkup is just the start of recovery—not the finish line. 🏁
Behind the scenes, your body is still healing from deep tissue changes, hormone shifts 🌊, and (let’s not forget) a literal internal wound where the placenta detached. 🩹🧠

Pushing through before your core and pelvic floor are ready can lead to setbacks like leaking 💧, pain 😣, or prolapse ⚠️.

If you’re not sure what’s normal—or if things just feel off—a pelvic floor PT can help guide you back safely and confidently. 💛🤝
