The old adage teaches us that "Home is where the heart is," which is why home is also where our hearts can most easily be broken. Broken through anger. Broken through bullying. Broken, most wrenchingly, through violence. Jewish homes are not immune to domestic abuse, nor are we free from the shame and stigma that too often enables this heartbreak to continue unseen. We have been fortunate that our lives remain untouched by the hand of abuse, but we also know lives that are not. That's why we are extremely thankful that Shalom Bayit is here so that Jewish survivors of abuse know that they do not suffer alone. By helping to raise awareness in our communities, those who suffer can find the courage to come forward and begin the journey to wholeness. And Shalom Bayit will accompany them on that journey through their many programs tailored to support the specific needs of survivors.

We are called to engage in Tikkun Olam, Repairing the World. That task is too big for any individual to accomplish alone, but alone we can choose to do our part. That's why we have become Chai Club members at Shalom Bayit, supporting their great work through monthly giving. At a challenging time for nonprofit organizations, the predictability of this model offers needed stability to agencies that seek to repair the world. We hope you will consider joining us in supporting Shalom Bayit in this manner and in thinking about Shalom Bayit in your Giving Tuesday plans.

Check out both the TV segment and print story below, highlighting the healing power of our work with survivors of domestic violence. We are so proud of founding board member Pamela Kramer, who shares her story here alongside Naomi Tucker. Thank you Pam for speaking your truth!

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and one local survivor is speaking out as she journeys forward.

Dear Shalom Bayit community,

On this somber anniversary of the horrific events of October 7, our hearts are filled with grief and determination. Our shock and sorrow have been shared across every home, every heart, and every prayer in our collective Jewish family.

Amidst today's many commemorations, we at Shalom Bayit want to especially remember the women who experienced brutal sexual violence on that day. We cannot imagine, and yet we must. We will not allow those atrocities to be diminished, dismissed, or justified. We are the voice for those who will never be able to tell their stories.

While the grief is immense, I find inspiration in how we have come together. The spirit of our people is defined not only by the hardships we endure but by the ways we hold one another through them. That's why throughout this excruciating year, Shalom Bayit has supported Bay Area Jewish women coping with the trauma aftermath of 10/7. It is why we brought our Israeli counterparts together in January for (S)Heroes on the Ground to hear how they are helping Israeli women through this impossible time. It is why we gathered 400 people this spring to find joy in our togetherness, and to celebrate the transformational visibility of . Today and every day, we resolve to ensure that Jewish survivors of gender-based violence get the care, safety and healing they deserve.

Although we begin our new year in grief, we will not be deterred from the work before us—to build a world where everyone can live in safety, dignity, and peace. Shalom Bayit's mission remains as urgent as ever. We hope you will continue standing with us to protect the women whose lives depend on us.

May the assaults on Israeli women and girls be a clarion call, and may the memories of those we have lost strengthen our resolve for interconnectedness.

With my deepest yearnings for peace and safety,
Naomi Tucker
Executive Director

We are at that time of year when the Jewish calendar affords us a time of deep reflection. With all that has happened in the Jewish world this past year, we need this more than ever: a time to rest, renew, reflect, come together in community, and do the spiritual work to be our best selves. A time to mend relationships - and we all know this year has challenged many friendships and broken connections - because Judaism teaches us that living in right relationship to others is central to being human. We may call this teshuvah as shorthand for making things right. But teshuvah is defined by a return to our truest self. Because we cannot control others. But we can control how we act and react in relation to others.

This holiday season, we invite you to try on the simple relationship teshuvah questions below. How might you apply them to various relationships in your life?

October is also . Join in important reflections about those who lack safety in the very place that should be most sacred.

Shana Tova U'Metuka / Blessings for a sweet new year,

Naomi Tucker
