🧬 Big news in the fight against prostate cancer!

UQ is teaming up with AdvanCell and top clinicians across Australia to develop a powerful new cancer treatment—Targeted Alpha Therapy. This new approach delivers radiation directly to prostate cancer cells, helping spare healthy tissue.

Thanks to an $18M grant from the Medical Research Future Fund, researchers will design tools that personalize treatment for each patient—leading to better outcomes and hope for thousands of men.

The University of Queensland will play a key role in a national effort to revolutionize treatment for men with prostate cancer.

🚨 Colorectal cancer is no longer just a disease of older adults. It's rising at alarming rates in people under 50, and many aren't aware they're at risk.

The American Cancer Society now estimates over 150,000 new colorectal cancer cases in 2025—and the rate in younger adults has been increasing by more than 2% annually.

The problem? Many symptoms don’t appear until late stages. That’s why doctors are urging everyone—especially young adults—to know the signs and get screened if you have symptoms or a family history.

šŸ›‘ Six symptoms you shouldn’t ignore:

1. Changes in bowel habits

2. Diarrhea or constipation

3. Blood in the stool

4. Persistent cramping or pain

5. Unexplained weight loss

6. Feeling like your bowels never empty

šŸ’” A colonoscopy is still the gold standard for detection and prevention—but new stool and blood tests are making screening more accessible.

šŸ‘„ Self-advocacy and early detection could mean the difference between a treatable polyp and a life-threatening diagnosis.

šŸ—£ Spread the word. Cancer doesn’t care about age—but awareness can save lives.

šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļø Just 30 more minutes of movement a day could help lower your cancer risk—no gym membership required.

A new study from the NIH and University of Oxford, involving over 85,000 people, found that even light daily activity—like walking, doing laundry, or running errands—can cut your risk of 13 types of cancer, including breast and colorectal.

šŸ’„ Most exciting part? It’s not about speed or intensity—it’s about consistency.

Here’s what the researchers found: šŸ‘Ÿ 7,000 steps/day = 11% lower cancer risk
šŸ‘Ÿ 9,000 steps/day = 16% lower cancer risk
šŸ“‰ After 9,000 steps, benefits level off

The study also showed that replacing sedentary time (think sitting at a desk or watching TV) with any physical activity—even light chores—makes a real difference.

So next time you think "it's just a walk around the block"... think again. Your future self may thank you.

šŸ‘ This is empowering science. Small steps, big impact.

🌟 Some good news in the fight against cancer 🌟

While scary headlines about health can take over the news, there’s important progress happening behind the scenes. According to the 2025 Annual Report to the Nation, cancer death rates in the U.S. have been steadily decreasing for the last two decades—even during the pandemic.

šŸ“‰ From 2018 to 2022, cancer death rates fell by an average of: āž”ļø 1.7% per year for men
āž”ļø 1.3% per year for women

This is largely thanks to declines in lung cancer, breakthroughs in treatment, and greater access to healthcare through efforts like the Affordable Care Act.

But we still have work to do.

āš ļø Cancer rates are rising among women under 50.
āš ļø Racial disparities in outcomes remain deeply troubling.
āš ļø Weight-related cancers are on the rise.

So while the progress is worth celebrating, we need to stay focused on equity, prevention, and supporting caregivers—especially women, who now shoulder a growing cancer burden.

Let’s keep moving forward together.

Bad health news has a way of taking over the headlines, and while there are many dangerous and debilitating diseases and infections on the rise, there is also great progress being made, year on year.

🚨 A groundbreaking step forward in brain cancer care.
Mayo Clinic researchers have unveiled a personalized blood test that could transform how doctors monitor high-grade gliomas—a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer.

Traditionally, clinicians rely on MRIs and biopsies to track tumor progression. But scans can be misleading, and biopsies are invasive.

This new approach uses a patient’s unique tumor DNA ā€œfingerprintā€ to look for circulating tumor fragments in the blood—offering a faster, less invasive, and more precise way to detect cancer changes.

šŸ’” In early trials, this test picked up changes before MRI scans did in some patients. That’s a potential game-changer for catching progression earlier and improving outcomes.

šŸ”¬ The research focuses on DNA junctions—special tumor-specific markers that help overcome the challenges of the brain’s protective blood-brain barrier.

🧬 ā€œBy tracking each tumor’s distinct molecular signature, we’re aiming to shift from a reactive approach to a proactive one,ā€ says neurosurgeon Dr. Terry Burns.

🌟 While more research is needed, this innovation could pave the way for more personalized and responsive treatment for patients battling one of the toughest cancers.

The advancement of biobanking in precision oncology has transformed research by providing crucial biological samples for biomarker discovery and personalized treatments. Biobanks play a vital role in ensuring the availability of well-annotated specimens for studying diseases like cancer. This evolution is driven by the necessity for diverse samples to comprehend the complexities of diseases and develop tailored treatments. Precision oncology, which integrates genetic, molecular, and clinical data, heavily relies on biobanks. The future of biobanking in precision oncology looks promising with advancements in technology and global collaboration accelerating discoveries and enhancing patient outcomes.

Biobanks fuel the multiomics-based practice of personalized oncomedicine and cancer biomarker discovery.

Liquid and synthetic biopsies have transformed cancer diagnosis by offering less invasive and more efficient methods. Liquid biopsies analyze blood samples for cancer indicators, while synthetic biopsies detect cancer cells early on. These advancements provide a promising approach to early detection and treatment, complementing traditional biopsy procedures. Read on to learn more!

Until recently, cancer detection depended on invasive solid tissue sampling that didn’t provide a complete picture. An emerging crowd of biotechs is making it easier to detect and monitor cancer with liquid biopsies.

MIT researchers have made significant progress in predicting lung cancer risk using the AI system 'Sybil.' This system can forecast an individual's chances of developing lung cancer up to 6 years in advance. With lung cancer causing more deaths in the US annually than the next three deadliest cancers combined, this advancement is crucial.

Researchers at MIT developed a new AI model that can predict lung cancer risk up to six years in advance through a single low-dose CT scan.

England's NHS is revolutionizing cancer treatment with a new injection that administers a drug in just 7 minutes—much faster than the current hour-long infusion. This breakthrough will streamline treatment for patients and save time for healthcare professionals. These drugs treat cancers and have been proven to be most effective against lung and breast cancers. It is expected to replace intravenous treatment.

Following the green light from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the NHS in England will be the first health system in t
