/ / The in between / /

There is a tender beauty to the in between spaces
when time has a texture
a certain stillness between the seconds
particles of dust hover in the sun drenched window
tiny feet slide half an inch under the skin,
waiting for the perfect moment to be born
the veins in the leaves are so gorgeous that tears well up
Maybe it is the in between spaces after all
when we have most fully
arrived

This beautiful image and poem by speaks so perfectly to the sacredness of life’s “in betweens”. These places of transition are often so fraught with fear and discomfort, but the dichotomy is that they can also hold so much opportunity for rest, reflection, and true presence. I always tell my clients that the spaces in between contractions are just as important as the contractions themselves, and the time right before labor starts is one of the most tender times imaginable.

The maternity care system at large is pretty broken. It’s appalling that pregnant people are being seen for 10-15 minute long visits in busy clinics and practices, often by different providers each time. It’s no wonder folx feel disempowered when birthing.

I believe that with enough education, support, and love, pregnant (and postpartum) people can gain some agency back and feel better prepared for the birth and parenthood journey.

These add-on midwifery services are meant to bridge the gap, and are perfect for people whose insurance won’t allow a full transfer of care (ahem, Kaiser). It’s also perfect if there’s a reason to stay under OB care but you’re wanting more.

Preparing your perineum for birth! Here’s a simple way to get your yoni ready to birth a baby, starting at around 36 weeks of pregnancy. It helps familiarize the pregnant person with the sensations of stretching to accommodate a baby’s head and gives partners away to participate in birth preparation. If you don’t have someone willing to help you with yoni stretching, you can do it yourself by putting two fingers in your va**na (from behind) and pulling for as long as you can stand it. I often suggest pregnant people do this while in the shower. Don’t worry, the only direction your elbow will bend is the way you should be pulling!
