Muslim Mental Health Initiative is a program founded to provide and promote mental health resources tailored to meet the needs of the Muslim community at UC Berkeley. The Muslim Mental Health Initiative is a program founded as a result of years of planning, discussion, and meetings both within and outside UC Berkeley’s Muslim Community surrounding the acquisition of mental health resources. As the
needs of this population continue to go unmet, community leaders decided to take direct action in order to find solutions. Through grant writing, we have been able to acquire funding to bring mental health professionals to Cal from Maristan, a non-profit organization that strives to revive the Islamic legacy of research and education that informs holistic healing and provides culturally and spiritually congruent, professional, accessible, and affordable mental health care for all. MMHI focuses on prevention and promotion of Muslim mental health by providing various services throughout the semester, such as: drop-in hours, support groups, and workshops throughout the semester.
