Think of magnesium as the relaxation mineral.

You must have magnesium for your cells to make energy, for many different chemical pumps to work, to stabilize membranes, and to help muscles relax.

The reason we are so deficient is simple: Many of us eat a diet that contains practically no magnesium — a highly-processed, refined diet that is based mostly on white flour, meat, and dairy (all of which have no magnesium).

Anything that is tight, irritable, crampy, and stiff — whether it is a body part or even a mood — is a sign of magnesium deficiency.

Including the following in your diet as often as you can:

Kelp, wheat bran, wheat germ, almonds, cashews, buckwheat, brazil nuts, dulse, filberts, millet, pecans, walnuts, rye, tofu, soybeans, brown rice, figs, dates, collard greens, shrimp, avocado, parsley, beans, barley, dandelion greens, and garlic.

I also highly recommend a daily magnesium supplement.

The most absorbable forms are magnesium citrate, glycinate taurate, or aspartate, although magnesium bound to Kreb cycle chelates (malate, succinate, fumarate) are also good. To properly absorb magnesium we need a lot of it in our diet, plus enough vitamin B6, vitamin D, and selenium to get the job done.

Avoid magnesium carbonate, sulfate, gluconate, and oxide. They are poorly absorbed (and the cheapest and most common forms found in supplements).

I am sure folks know how incredibly difficult it is to get a speedy COVID test these days. Often it is at least 3 days to a week to find a test. And then 2 to 5 days plus to get results. By that time, hopefully you are just fine but one would have no idea whether quarantine is needed.

I bought some rapid COVID tests. The accuracy is a bit questionable. I would quote statistics but they seem to vary depending on the test and the study. However, I still think it is reasonable to have some on hand. One can get them online or a a drugstore but there is a delay online and short supply at drugstores. I still think it is worth the effort. Taking two tests a day apart seems to increase the accuracy. I also just read a Chronicle article about Wachter (UCSF) trying to get an accurate test for his son. The first test came back negative but his son was definitely ill. https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Medicine-meets-emotion-UCSF-COVID-expert-shares-16760310.php?sid=5ad21840bf00816f7b43dc34&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=headlines&utm_campaign=sfc_morningfix

I know there is a paywall so this is what I found interesting and had never seen mentioned before:
"This time, Wachter looked at reports that suggested it may not be enough to just swab your nose. He wrote: “Swabbing the throat PLUS nose” works better. “That’s what we did: a good rub around his tonsils & tongue, and then (same swab - a bit gross) both nostrils.”
They waited the usual 15 minutes and, this time, the dreaded pink line appeared."

“I’ve been tweeting about COVID for nearly 2 years,” tweeted UCSF’s Dr. Bob...

"If you can’t find one of these masks, or if you’re not sure whether they meet the standards, there’s something you can do right now with confidence: Double-mask with a surgical mask and a cloth mask. The surgical mask gives you good, certified filtration, while the cloth mask on top helps improve the fit. Research shows this can achieve greater than 90 percent filtration.

Many people ask if they need an N95 on their morning runs or while sitting on a park bench. The answer to both is no. Choose masks based on the level of risk for that activity. If you’re out for a jog with no one around or on a walk outside with a friend, a simple two- or three-layer cloth mask is fine. But use a hi-fi mask or double-mask if you head indoors."

With better masks, essential workers could have hospital-grade protections. What's stopping us?

"A new study that looked at 216 people with COVID-19 found that 80 percent didn’t have adequate levels of vitamin D in their blood.
The study also found that people who had both COVID-19 and lower vitamin D levels also had a higher number of inflammatory markers such as ferritin and D-dimer, which have been linked to poor COVID-19 outcomes.
A different study found that COVID-19 patients who had adequate vitamin D levels had a 51.5 percent lower risk of dying from the disease and a significant reduced risk for complications.
Medical experts theorize that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels may help lower risk or aid recovery from severe COVID-19 for some people, though more testing is needed."

Testing is important both before supplementation and after being on a supplement for 3 months. Generally, for every 10 points one is below 80, you can take 1000 IU per day. So if your level is 30, you can take 5000--with some sort of fat to help it absorb. If your level is 50 to 80 (rare), you are fine. 30 is barely enough although that is what most labs set as the lower limit and most of the studies used around 24 as the divider i.e. below that there were many more covid issues. Until you get tested, 1000 should be fine and you just have to figure that into test results. The huge caveat being that too much is indeed dangerous but I have never seen a test result without supplementation that is over 58. Most folks here are 20 to 35. But GET TESTED!

A growing amount of research is finding a link between vitamin D and COVID-19, leading some experts to believe the vitamin may be helpful in the fight against the virus.
