I work with mental and emotional health every day in clinic. Even when someone comes in for pain, digestion, or sleep, it is always part of the picture.

But, here is what I wish more people knew:

We need our emotions.

Much of contemporary wellness treats emotional health as the achievement of calm. Regulation is framed as smoothing or quieting experience. The goal becomes an unruffled state.

From the perspective of classical Chinese medicine, this is physiologically misguided. Striving for that state stunts us, makes us sick.

Emotions are not psychological noise. They are movements of qi that carry information about alignment and direction. Health depends on being able to feel them clearly and respond, not suppress them.

If this seems difficult, it is treatable. Chinese medicine helps restore the capacity to feel without being overwhelmed.

It's like a bicycle wheel: it has to do with the gallbladder and how it hands off to the liver. I'll show you why.

You have all heard me rail against Gregorian New Year for years now. I stand by it.

The Gregorian calendar is deeply distorting when it comes to recognizing natural change. Winter solstice is the middle of winter, not the beginning. After all, how can it get more wintery once the days are already lengthening?

I will die on that hill. But…it’s true: this time of year is crucial. Let me tell you why.

A different kind of newness is happening.

Here is the nuance: Although January 1 is not the beginning of the lunisolar new year, the days surrounding Gregorian New Year are physiologically and energetically potent and related to our sense of purpose. It's about our deep knowing how to move toward balance. It's about the gallbladder. So, on that level, framing this moment as a kind of newness actually makes sense, if we understand why.

This time offers Medicine for Confusion. It's all about the gallbladder channel. Read my article that lays it out for you.

This isn’t the “fertile dark.”
This is the fallow dark. The feral dark.

The world goes quiet not to comfort us — but to strip us down to what’s real.

The trees are bare. The heart is bare.

We’re moving through an interesting stretch of the year 💫. The midpoint of autumn—the equinox—arrives later this month 🍂, while Lunar New Year won’t come until mid-February 2026, unusually late. That delay stretches out the sensation of uncertainty, as if the year itself is suspended in midair.

Just saw this commentary (below and in first comment) and cracked up. It’s giving major Snake vibes. 🐍

This question of authenticity: What is deep? What matters? 🤷‍♀️

The idea that calling out inauthenticity is itself shallow—just another performance. 🐚

But the question behind that critique is so Snake: Well then what really matters anyway? 🔑

Nothing? ⚫️ Maybe!

And also… if we follow that thread all the way through, don’t we get spit out the other side? Everything. 🖤

Or…? ❓⁉️

What is substantial? ⚖️

Personal share: I’m back home with family for a funeral, and it’s turning into an unexpected moment of ancestral connection 🌳—seeing myself in the facets of my family’s faces 💎, and looking into the mirror🪞of death.

I’m fully embracing emojis right now because I used to resist them. Turns out flexibility is fun. I’m also leaning into genuine laughter—not ironic, not smirking—because otherwise things can get real heavy, real fast. A lot of us are carrying quiet grief. That’s part of the Yin Wood Snake year… unless we access that playful, flexible Monkey King wisdom. 🐒👑

What’s up (for me) feels confrontational. Celebratory. Weirdly beautiful. Honestly? I have no idea what tf it is. Because trying to know something right now? That’s peak folly. Snake says: shed the certainty.

(By the way, the larger talk about this is happening on WhatsApp on Purple Star Club, if you want to join. The 🔗 is on the website.)

We’re at the heart of it: the year, that is.

We’re now in the Summer Solstice qi node, peak of yang in a yin wood snake year. Snake is yin fire: quiet but potent. This season is when the real themes of the year begin to surface—sometimes suddenly, even explosively. 🪷 It is also heart time. ❤️

Wood Snake might seem gentle, but real shifts are happening. What was hidden is being revealed. 🐍

I wrote something for you...follow through to the comments.

Don’t just do something: sit there!!! 🪵🐍✨

It is quadruple snake day here at the clinic! But wherever you are, take some time today to go deep! Be still! Close your eyes! Especially now, while it is still snake hour (until 10am, for my West Coasties).

Love you all and nothing matters!
