Purging Pesky Parasites

The World Health Organization estimates that a full 90 percent of all children in rural Guatemala are infected with parasites. When this begins in a child’s first year, the child is much more likely to become malnourished. Parasites exacerbate malnutrition by absorbing nutrients meant for the human body to turn into energy. It is critical to de-worm children on a regular basis to ensure proper physical development, concentration, and energy.

“Most children and adults don’t address this critical issue on a regular basis,” noted Estrella Vasquez, nurse at Xela AID Clinic. This month, Xela AID Clinic treated 65 children between the ages of 3 to 6 years studying at the Rotary-funded Xela AID Montessori Preschool.

“The dose is highly effective and drinkable,” noted Estrella of the strawberry-flavored liquid that is intended to be repeated every six months. Pre-pandemic, Xela AID Clinic dewormed 900 children each year, a figure it aims to double by the end of 2021 through funds provided by the A-Team Support Group.

Agricultural disease is a common and growing issue straining the manner in which food is produced. Current attempts with organic food production, while laudable, are not sustainable and thus not fully followed by those with an organic certification.

The wide use of pesticides and fungicides has resulted in increased resistance, reduced efficacy, and a decline in rich soil micro biome. Current research points to the benefits of small-scale farming with local food distribution. However, in light of these issues, agricultural enterprises face an insurmountable challenge with limited profitability.

Case and point, the wine industry continues to face diseases such as Powdery Milldew without effective organically approved methods of treatment. Recent innovation within bacteriophage, a natural alternative to antibiotics for human and animal health, offers a promising solution to agriculture and the production of natural foods.

This health concern is where Satya Project and Chateau La Combelle wish to make a meaningful change. Click below for more information on Powdery Mildew, which we will be addressing at the Chateau La Combelle winery. The current chemical solutions are also outlined below. We aim to be amongst the first to improve the approach within natural disease prevention and management. And all the while, creating beautifully delicious natural wines!

Both indoor and outdoor grapes suffer from fungal diseases which affect leaves and fruit. The three top grape diseases are downy mildew, powdery mildew, and grey mould. Four grapevine viruses have also recently been detected in the U.K. but are not currently known to be widespread.

With our focus on environment and nourishment, Satya Project is a leader in agricultural and culinary innovation. We turn our efforts towards the advancement of natural wine and its wide-spread benefit within agriculture, wine production, and to those who enjoy fine wine. Together with Chateau La Combelle, we strive to improve upon the current means of food production through translational research (research while doing). Naturally, this means wine with a twist towards health. Hoorah!

What is natural wine, you ask? Check out the link below.

The word "natural" is a bit more ambiguous than you might think. Here's what you to need to know about this hot trend and what it means for your wine drinking pleasure.
