The Woman Project

The Woman Project 1 Poster a Week for 52 Weeks of 52 Women from 52 Countries
In Order to Educate, Empower, and Envision a Better World for Women and Men

We live in a hyper-visual world. Images help us to understand each other, and ourselves while also mediating our interactions. These images present a problem when they narrow the field of possibilities for specific individuals. In these images women are too often presented as sexual objects, to be possessed by men, with their greatest aspiration generally being to be prized by a powerful man. You can see such images inside of advertisements, music videos, movies, etc. The real world consequences can also be seen in the statistics around the violence that is routinely committed against women. Part of the way to address this problem is to insert images of women that challenge these problematic representations. The Woman Project (TWP) aims to do just that. Through the art of silk-screening and through social media TWP will work to illustrate women who are notable for their intellectual and/or political merits from around the globe every week for a year. I launched the project on March 1st, 2014, alongside Women’s History Month. The posters themselves are designed in such a way that their formal aesthetic qualities echo the project’s ideological ideas. That is, the most prominent element of the poster is a representation of the particular woman’s head. The body has not been included because of its over emphasis in mainstream media. This is followed by their name, which is then followed by a quotation from the subject. TWP tries to ensure that the women speak in their own voice, so whenever an original quotation can be found, even if it is not in English, it is listed below their name alongside an asterisk that directs the viewer to the bottom of the page for an English translation. Dear All,

For the last five months I have been working on The Woman Project, and outside of one week during finals, I have posted a new representation of a different woman from a different country every week since. While I have met some great people through the process and enjoyed doing the work I am putting the project on an indefinite hiatus. I have many reasons for doing so but the main reason is that the project has not been effective in the way that I had hoped. The images are hardly ever liked and are almost never shared and for this reason the portraits do not extend past a very small social circle, mostly of my friends and family and the few hundred followers on the TWP social media pages. This is not the fault of any of the viewers or fans, this is the fault of the design. I have one more year left in school and with a senior thesis and my final classes starting in a few weeks I have very little free time and while this project is a great use of my days in general, I need to put it on hold so that I can further experiment with different approaches to my feminist or broader political beliefs that might be more impactful. I apologize if I have let any of you down, but I believe that this is the best step I can make at the moment to help further the political and artistic goals I have committed myself to.

Sincerely,

Nick Randhawa

The figure of the unknown Cambodian is TWP's twentieth hero. Her name, her image, her family, her history, all lost through her resistance to the tyranny. This is an attempt to remember her presence.

Hey Everyone,

I'm sorry to have to do this but I am going to be late on this week's post. Finals have me pinned down and I am going to a mental health conference all day tomorrow, for which I leave in a few hours, and I just can't finish the design. I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive me :)

Cheers,

Nick
