Pupil dilation is a crucial part of a comprehensive eye examination. By using special eye drops that take approximately 10–15 minutes to take effect, we can temporarily enlarge your pupils, allowing your doctor to thoroughly evaluate not only the front of the eye but also the retina—the posterior structure that comprises over 70% of the eye. This expanded view is essential for detecting, diagnosing, and managing various eye conditions that may otherwise go unnoticed. While you may experience some temporary light sensitivity following dilation, especially in bright conditions, wearing sunglasses can help minimize any discomfort. There are no activity restrictions post-exam, and patients can resume their normal routine immediately. The effects of dilation typically wear off within 4–6 hours, after which your pupils will return/constrict back to their normal size.
