UE mourns the loss of Brother Saladin Muhammad, who served on UE staff and played a key role in founding and building UE150 NC Public Service Workers Union. He passed away on Monday after a long battle with illness.

Black Workers for Justice, an organization that Muhammad helped found, issued a statement on Monday declaring that “Brother Saladin leaves an outstanding legacy of revolutionary commitment, leadership, consciousness, and direct organizing of our people’s struggle for liberation.”

An obituary for Muhammad will appear in the next issue of the UE NEWS.

"If some workers are essential, then so are some workplaces, and those workplaces should be held to the highest standards of workplace health and safety during this crisis. And, if they fail to do so on their own, then they should be held to that standard by the people and the federal government. There are plenty of examples of such things happening in US history during wartime, and, this time around, the labor movement is doing its best to uphold the popular part of the deal. In some places, labor is finding help at the state and local level. Unfortunately, all this work is being made more difficult by a federal government that consistently sides with those business owners who have no interest in high standards."
