Balanced Yoga & Wellness

Balanced Yoga & Wellness BYW is a referral-based private practice in Berlin, MD that offers evidence-informed Yoga Therapy Why not strive to become as fully integrated as possible?

BY&W employs an inter-disciplinary approach to the art and science of yoga: from mindful movement and breath-centered practices, to positive psychology and the latest in anatomy, neuroscience and pain research, our aim is to bring the nervous and musculoskeletal systems back into functional balance, to increase stress resilience (our ability to 'cope'), and from that space, encourage integration of the body-mind-spirit complex. The goal is a sense of self-empowerment through connectedness - whether it's the lumbo-sacral rhythm, the head-to-heart (thoughts-to-emotions), the gut-to-brain (the enteric nervous system), or the Self-to-the-Whole...what we create on the microcosm of our sticky mat, we bring to the macrocosm of our world.

Having a felt sense of being seen, of belonging, of mattering forms first in relationship with other, before we can reflect and resource this from within. These moments can be subtle, yet they leave an imprint on how we relate to ourselves over time.

QOTW: Who first believed in me?

This may bring forward memories of someone who saw something special in you, who reflected possibility, upheld your potential (even before you could access it for yourself), or maybe they simply held a quiet trust in the beauty and perfection of your unfolding.

I imagine at least one person comes to mind, maybe more, what a blessing! Maybe you’d like to send them a silent, heartfelt nod of appreciation, an energetic fist-pump for voting your victory, or maybe a text or phone call if they’re still alive, telling them how much they mean to you.
As always, notice what arises within you and give that a little nod too. =)

Reminder - all QOTWs are available on my website, and my answers once a month are sent to my email subscribers and posted on my blog, aperture: a space for conscious growth & self mastery.

Growing my own sprouts is something I return to as a simple way to support my nourishment.

Sprouts are living foods, rich in enzymes, vitamins, and antioxidants that support digestion, energy, and overall vitality. Freshly harvested sprouts contain a life force that your body responds to almost instantly - a feeling you can’t get from processed foods.

There are many different kinds of sprouts, some are more “earthy” tasting than others, which is why I suggest experimenting with various types of seeds and legumes - see which ones you like best. A tiny bit of seed goes a really long way - a powerful bang for your buck in terms of nutrient density.

Sprouting is much easier than you might imagine. Each seed has its own germination timing, and there are many resources online with instructions. The process itself is literally just soaking and rinsing, and they grow…that’s it!

They are easy to add to meals—salads, wraps, bowls, or on their own.

It does not need to be complicated to be supportive.

Give it a try, and tag me on your pics!

In every new season, intention takes shape…
through form, we can explore what is ready to shift, express, or come forward.

The mind reaches, and discovers that thought alone is incomplete.
Something in you knows there is a somatic component that fills the gap, that demands acknowledgment of it’s contribution to the felt sense of wholeness you long for.

Play can support this process.
Not as something light or careless,
as something that allows the system to explore without pressure,
to move, to feel, to discover what is true.

In that space, patterns soften.
Awareness expands.
Clarity begins to form.

Intention emerges from within,
grounded, responsive, and aligned.

What is ready to move through you as you meet this season with curiosity and play?

Modern neuroscience has demonstrated that emotions (including playfulness) are not fixed responses we “have” or “don’t have.” They are experiences the brain constructs in the moment, based on context, memory, and what feels safe enough.

From this lens, playfulness doesn’t disappear as we grow older, it becomes conditional. It’s not something we lose, it’s something the nervous system allows…when conditions feel right.

Playfulness is a state the body permits, and tends to emerge when the system senses:
• enough safety
• enough space
• enough permission to explore without consequence

Which makes this week’s QOTW [When do I feel playful and childlike again?] less about finding play…and more about recognizing the conditions where it naturally returns.

So instead of asking, “Why am I not more playful?”
you might gently wonder: When does play already find me?

To aid you in discovering this for yourself, I’ve created a FREE DOWNLOAD called:Serious About Play—Locating Play in Your Lived Experience

You can find this PDF, as well as my personal response to this week’s question, in this week’s Blog post on my website.

As always, I’d love to hear your answer - when do you feel playful and childlike again?

Play isn’t frivolous. It’s not extra.
It’s one of the most efficient pathways to learning, integration, and lasting change.

That said, not all play is regulating. When we’re in states of pressure, performance, or “getting it right” (competition), the nervous system braces, repetition becomes effortful, progress feels slow.

When play is free from pressure, performance, or outcome…
the system softens, and learning accelerates.

In play that is exploratory rather than outcome-driven, curiosity replaces control.
The brain becomes more receptive, more adaptive, more alive.

This is why we don’t just talk about change in my work — we embody it. We experiment with it. We play with it.

We can still move the needle of change in subtle and potent ways through light-hearted-ness.
Transformation doesn’t always have to be heavy to be real.
And it doesn’t have to be hard to be meaningful.

It takes far less effort to rewire the brain than we’ve been led to believe…when the body feels safe enough to play.

What if the path to what you want…is more playful than you think?

Simplified nourishment is possible.

Take homemade nut or h**p milk, for example. A cup full of h**p seeds or raw cashews (soaked a few hours before or overnight, if you have time), 4 cups of filtered water, and a blender come together in just a few minutes to create something fresh, clean, and supportive for the body [you can add a date or two for sweetness, a dash of vanilla or a pinch of cinnamon to mix it up!].

Simple practices in the kitchen can be a quiet way of returning to nourishment. Often the most supportive foods are also the simplest.

Take note of the difference between how chia seeds absorb my homemade h**p milk versus store bought almond milk - astounding!

Many of the choices we make are shaped by a sense of limitation. Time, energy, money, and resources can influence how we prioritize and where we place our attention. When we pause and imagine life outside of those constraints, something deeper begins to surface.

QOTW: If I had unlimited resources and could never run out, what would I do with my time and energy?

This question is not about creating a perfect plan. It is an invitation to notice what naturally draws your curiosity, care, and enthusiasm when scarcity is no longer part of the equation.

I invite you to sit with this question and notice what arises in your body and mind.

If you feel called, you are always welcome to share or send a DM.

It was an honor to present at the Divine Beauty Women’s Retreat where I spoke on Meditation & the Mind-Body Connection — How it Works and Why it Matters. I treasure the opportunity to share space with people who are open, curious, and willing to meet themselves in a deeper way.

We explored the evolution of stress and the nervous system, how the body registers safety and updates our mind’s prediction mechanics, and why meditation becomes more accessible when the system feels supported — not by forcing, but by creating the conditions for attention to be drawn inward organically.

In between it all…time in the city, walking, laughing, enjoying delicious plant-based food, and ending the weekend with a Broadway musical (Chess). A reminder that nourishment also lives in joy, laughter, and shared experience.

Winter asks us to slow down, conserve, and listen.
Spring asks a different question: What’s ready to move?

My new workshop, Serious About Play: Embodied Intention for the Season Ahead, is an invitation to sense into that question through the body—not as a push toward productivity, but as a gentle orientation toward what wants to grow.

Using fun, exploratory embodiment practices grounded in breath, balance, fluidity, and sensory awareness, we’ll investigate how intention emerges naturally when the nervous system feels supported and the body is listened to.

Many of us have learned to associate seriousness with safety and play with irresponsibility. In reality, rigidity—not playfulness—is what limits adaptation and clarity.

This won’t be performative or frivolous. Play here is intelligent, purposeful, and embodied.

Here, we will be serious about play. ;-)

Feeling grateful to be invited as the Keynote Speaker for the upcoming Divine Beauty Women’s Retreat this weekend.

I’ll be sharing a talk on Meditation & the Mind-Body Connection — How it Works and Why it Matters.

We’ll explore things like:
• Why the nervous system predicts threat before we consciously think
• Why “just relax” doesn’t actually work
• How the body registers safety
• Why meditation becomes easier when the nervous system settles first

Sharing a few slides here to give a glimpse into the conversation.

I love helping people understand that meditation isn’t about “clearing the mind” — it’s about creating the conditions where stillness emerges organically.

Speaking at retreats and gatherings like this is one of the ways I love sharing the intersection of nervous system science, embodiment, conscious language, self-awareness, and contemplative practice.

If you’re planning a retreat or event and looking for a keynote speaker on these or related topics, I’m always open for meaningful collaborations!

Thank you to everyone who attended yesterday's workshop: emBODYing TRUTH: from Contradiction to Coherence.

I was deeply touched by your presence, curiosity, and courage to explore what competing instructions are operating in the background of your life, and how the body is perfectly (Divinely) designed as Signal’s gateway to clarity, coherence, and inner peace, if we follow it’s wisdom and guidance. Not by forcing change, but by creating the conditions for truth to emerge, you allowed yourself to know what you know. This is the first step toward harmony.

I loved using Jenga as a metaphor for the protective, stabilizing scaffolding we build as a substitute for true coherence. Each block represented a survival strategy, a conditioned belief, a nervous system ‘rule’ — these were not chosen consciously, they were installed, or they were intelligent adaptations. And at some point, the structures we built to stay stable simply reach the end of their usefulness, and the structure reaches threshold and collapses - not because it was wrong, but because something stronger is ready to emerge.

These gatherings come to life through the sincerity and participation of each person in the room. I’m profoundly grateful to share in this work together.

And a special thanks to for hosting us in her sacred art studio - can't think of a better place to do this inner work than surrounded by the colors and creations of your beautiful soul! xo
