Help me in celebrating National Women Physicians Day! On this day Elizabeth Blackwell was born – she would later become the first woman in America to earn her medical degree.

It is only by standing on the shoulders of giants that I have been able to achieve the career of my dreams. For centuries, women have struggled to be recognized for their intelligence, their diligence, and their contributions. I am eternally grateful to the women who paved the way for my career in medicine. One of my favorite mentors, Anne Davis, MD, a brilliant, compassionate physician taught me the value of perseverance in the face of adversity. Dr. Davis was one of the only women in her medical school class. Despite the naysayers, she not only graduated, but became a renowned leader in her field of pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

The privilege to practice medicine is not taken lightly. I am all the more fortunate to participate in the field of women’s health- where every day we help women care for their bodies and take control of their fertility.
