The Sartorius muscle is one of our favourite body landmarks when learning EMMETT.
It is easy to activate Sartorius under our fingers and this means that we can more easily locate some of the EMMETT points that are important in working on the pelvis, upper leg and knee.

🌟 The Man Behind the Magic – Ross Emmett 🌟
💙 Founder of the EMMETT Technique 💙

From humble beginnings in outback Australia to teaching his method across the globe, Ross Emmett has dedicated his life to helping people and animals move, feel, and live better — all through the power of gentle touch.

Ross didn’t start out in the medical world. In fact, he was a dog trainer and worked on cattle stations — where he began to notice that small, precise pressure applied to the body could trigger rapid, positive change. What started as intuition and observation quickly evolved into something profound: a unique body therapy that’s now known as the EMMETT Technique.

⚡ People said it was too simple.
⚡ Too gentle.
⚡ Too good to be true.

But Ross proved them wrong — again and again — with real results.

Through years of study, refinement, and dedication, Ross created a technique that’s easy to learn, effective, and accessible to everyone — not just health professionals. Today, his legacy lives on in thousands of EMMETT Practitioners worldwide, helping both humans and animals find comfort, relief, and balance.

🧠 “I believe that the body has the ability to change quickly — if you know how to ask it the right way.” — Ross Emmett

Ross’s mission?
👉 To empower ordinary people with extraordinary tools.
👉 To make healing simple, respectful, and kind.
👉 And to keep sharing this work with the world.

🌏 Thank you, Ross, for reminding us that even the lightest touch can create change.

The debate always seems to be gentle therapy or deep tissue treatments. Certainly the EMMETT technique can be classed as gentle and can be such a surprise for many new clients when finger tip touch can bring such quick results.

There are scientific studies and neuroscience-based insights that support the idea that gentle touch can be more effective—or at least more appropriate—than deep pressure, particularly in contexts like chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and nervous system regulation. Here are some key references and concepts to back this up:

🧠 1.
Gate Control Theory of Pain

Melzack & Wall (1965)
This foundational theory explains that non-painful input (like soft touch) can “close the gate” to painful input in the spinal cord, blocking pain sensations from reaching the brain.
Deep pressure can sometimes stimulate nociceptors (pain receptors), opening the gate instead.

🌿 2.
C-Tactile (CT) Afferents – Nerves That Respond to Gentle Touch
Studies have identified a type of nerve fiber—C-tactile afferents—that responds specifically to slow, gentle, pleasant touch and sends soothing signals to the brain. These signals help regulate the emotional and pain-processing areas of the brain.

Löken, L. S., Wessberg, J., Morrison, I., McGlone, F., & Olausson, H. (2009). Coding of pleasant touch by unmyelinated afferents in humans. Nature Neuroscience, 12(5), 547–548.
DOI: 10.1038/nn.2312

💥 3.
Central Sensitization in Chronic Pain
In conditions like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, the nervous system is sensitized and overreacts to pressure. Deep pressure may worsen symptoms, while gentle, non-threatening input can help regulate and calm the system.

DOI: 10.2174/157339707781386194

🧘 4.
Touch and the Parasympathetic Nervous System
Gentle touch has been shown to stimulate the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) system, which helps the body calm down, reduce pain, and enter healing states.

DOI: 10.1016/j.dr.2011.01.001

🧩 Summary
Gentle touch communicates safety and comfort to the nervous system.
It’s more suitable for pain-sensitive or trauma-affected bodies.
It’s backed by both neuroscience and clinical research.

The EMMETT Technique complements other therapies beautifully 😀

Whether you're seeing a physiotherapist, osteopath, chiropractor, or doing regular movement work like pilates or yoga, the EMMETT Technique may help enhance those results.

That’s because it works with the body’s own feedback systems, without overstimulation.

Practitioners often call it the “missing link” in their toolkit, adding clarity and precision to their work.

Ouch! The Painful Beginning

In 2011 I fell on the ice and hurt my tailbone. I had never had a massage or gone to a chiropractor before so the thought of going to one never crossed my mind. I figured it would eventually loosen up. The pain did lessen but months later we drove 10 hours to visit family. When we reached our destination I had a hard time getting out of the car. Once again I figured it would loosen up but the evening before heading home I was still having a hard time getting up out of a chair. I dreaded that trip home. I knew my brother-in-law “worked on people”. I asked what he could do for me. He had me lay in the middle of the living room floor and with everyone else as audience he worked on me. When he finished, I stood up WITHOUT PAIN. I was impressed. I found out what he did was Bowenwork. I stayed pain free for a few weeks. I decided this was something I wanted to learn! Plus, as I learned I was getting worked on. I no longer have a tailbone problem. Now I enjoy helping people! Along with my continuing education classes I have been certified in the Emmett Technique and the McLauglin Scar Tissue Release.
