To put things simply, sports massage is manual therapy designed specifically to help active people meet their goals—whether those goals consist of enhancing their performance or recovering from an injury. Unlike a spa or relaxation treatment, in which the therapist may use a routine to cover the entire body, sports therapists work in a more specific manner to address a particular problem or to work toward a particular goal, using whatever tools necessary to achieve those ends.

With the winter months, you may have noticed that your body doesn't move the way it did when it was 80 degrees outside. If you were running or training outdoors and recently shifted everything inside, that change usually comes with heavier lifts, tighter spaces, and more intensity. 💥

That's a big change for your body to adjust to, and you very well could see an increase in back tightness, shoulder irritation, or even old aches and injuries flaring up that wouldn't normally bother you in the warmer months.

It’s common for athletes to assume their recovery isn’t working because they need to do "more" of something. More stretching, more yoga, more mobility, more whatever. But most of the time, it’s because the work you’re doing doesn’t line up with what your body is actually struggling with. 👎

Some people stretch nonstop when the real issue is stability. Others are strong in one direction but missing rotation or control in the areas their sport relies on. When your recovery work doesn’t match how you move, you’re going to feel stuck no matter how much you do.
