After 8 years of being a breast cancer survivor, I finally have my wedding ring back on my finger! ✨
Due to lymphedema in my left arm, I haven’t been able to wear it since surgery, and it took me a while to accept that I’d need to resize it—two sizes! I didn’t realize how much I missed wearing it until now. 💍
Lymphedema is something many don’t talk about, but it’s a real possibility after cancer surgery, especially with lymph node removal. It causes swelling, typically in the arms and can happen even years after surgery or treatment.
Early signs include swelling, tightness, or heaviness in the affected area. It’s crucial to catch it early to prevent it from progressing—there are treatments to help manage it!
Here are 4 tips to help prevent lymphedema after breast cancer surgery:
1. Stay Active: Gentle exercises like walking, stretching, and light arm movements help promote healthy circulation and reduce the risk of fluid buildup. Keep moving to support lymphatic flow! 🏃♀️
2. Protect Your Arm: Small cuts or infections can trigger lymphedema, so take care of your skin. 🧤
3. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being at a healthy weight can help reduce the risk of lymphedema. A balanced diet and regular activity support overall health and lymphatic function. 🍎🏋️♀️
4. Practice Gentle Compression: Wearing a compression sleeve or garment can help prevent swelling, especially during activities or long flights. Compression promotes lymphatic drainage and keeps the swelling at bay. 🧦
Early prevention is key—take care of your body and be mindful of any changes! 💪
And don’t be like me and wait so long to get your ring enlarged! I didn’t think it bothered me but having it back on my finger again is like getting a piece of me back! It really caught me by surprise by how good I felt once I got it back on my finger.
