This is so, so heartbreaking on so many levels. This couple struggled with infertility for SO long, doing treatment after treatment. She finally got pregnant and we all celebrated with her. Unfortunately, due to complications from childbirth, it was announced Hailey has passed away.

The US is still #1 in mortality rate for pregnant/laboring women/postpartum mothers of any first world/developed countries. This is the third death due to labor complications I’ve seen in the last week. Having someone there to advocate for you - whether it be a doula, a husband/partner, mother or best friend - is *SO* incredibly important.

QUESTION FOR MY FELLOW BIRTH WORKERS: What led you to a career in birth work? I would absolutely love to hear (and if I have permission, feature!) your stories!

Mine started in late summer/early fall of 2019. That was when my mother introduced me to the show Call the Midwife. I expected to enjoy it, as I’ve always loved historical dramas like that. What I did not expect was how the thought of the career absolutely consumed me. Like many my age, I had gone through several start and gos in what I wanted from a career. As a teenager, I wanted to be a psychologist and started college pursuing that degree. Then I moved to Veterinary Technician. Then I wanted to travel, but get paid, so I decided TESL was a good idea - that didn’t last long. I was burnt out on customer service jobs that I felt little passion for. I love to help others, but just didn’t get anything out those positions.

Watching the show and learning it was based off real experiences and not just the glorified births we see on TV changed things. Something switched on my brain. I wanted to know more about midwifery, so I read the trilogy CTM is based on. I quickly followed that with dozens of other novels written by midwives about their practice. I watched documentaries, followed doula and midwifery blogs, and honestly became rather obsessed with birth work. The more I learned (esp concerning the state of birth in the US), the more adamant I felt this was for me. Inside me, I began to feel a fire growing - something I really couldn’t explain, but knew I wanted to do. The thought of returning to school in my 30’s scared me, but also excited me at the same time. [ FINISHED STORY IN COMMENTS!)

Hey there, amazing mamas and mamas-to-be! Let’s dive into the wonderful world of doulas and how they can be a game-changer for your pregnancy and birth experience.

First off, what exactly is a doula? Think of them as your pregnancy and birth BFF – someone who’s got your back and is there to support you every step of the way. Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to mothers before, during, and shortly after childbirth. This isn’t just about having someone to hold your hand (though, that’s definitely part of it!); it’s about empowering you with the knowledge and confidence you need to make informed decisions about your birth plan.

Now, let’s talk about the magic they bring to the table. Research shows that having a doula can lead to shorter labors, fewer medical interventions, and a more positive birth experience overall. They help you understand your options, advocate for your preferences, and offer comfort measures like massage, breathing techniques, and positioning suggestions. Imagine having someone there who not only understands your fears and anxieties but also knows exactly how to help you through them. Whether it’s providing a calming presence, encouraging words, or practical advice, doulas are all about making sure you feel supported and heard.

But the support doesn’t stop at birth! Doulas also offer postpartum assistance, helping you navigate those first few weeks with a newborn. From breastfeeding support to just being a shoulder to lean on, they ensure you’re not alone during this transformative time. So, if you’re considering adding a doula to your birth team, know that you’re inviting a dedicated ally who’s committed to making your journey as smooth and empowering as possible. You’ve got this, and with a doula by your side, you’re even more unstoppable. 🌟

There is absolutely a time and place for modern medicine in birth - especially in times of legitimate emergencies. However, there is a growing gap between how birth *should* be practiced and how birth is *actually* practiced. Most OB’s today have not seen a non-medicated, natural birth as our bodies were built to do. They are surgeons - at the end of the day, they are not taught to care for the mother and let her body do the work, but to do the work FOR her. Over medicating, rushing labor, forced/unnecessary c-sections are far, far too common, especially here in the United States.

We have been told for the last 100 years that we don’t know how to give birth. Films have taught us that birth is a horrifically painful experience and something to be feared. The United States has the highest mortality rate for childbirth of any first world country. Far, far too many women are dying in childbirth or have terrible and traumatic experiences that are absolutely NOT necessary.

Again, this is not saying medicine isn’t helpful or shouldn’t be involved in birth at all. It should … but ONLY on the mother’s terms. There absolutely needs to be a change in the way birth is done here in the US and that starts with how birth itself is viewed. With evidence based education and not fear.
