We are working hard up in Montpelier to make access to Eye Care procedures easier for our patients. We're being told they want to hear from patients. If you wouldn't mind calling or emailing today to ask to get this bill passed we would appreciate it. It is sitting/stalled in the Health and Welfare Committee right now, which is chaired by Senator Ginny Lyons. https://legislature.vermont.gov/committee/detail/2026/27.

Time is running out to move S.64, a bill to expand the scope of practice for optometry. We have advanced the bill from one committee and now need Senate Health & Welfare to finish their work and advance the bill to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Please help us by contacting your senator TODAY!!! Tell them you want to expand access, decrease wait times and costs for patient eye care in our beautiful state.

📞Call Sergeant at Arms-802-828-2228. Leave a message ask them to help move S.64, Expanding the Scope of Practice for Optometry, through the Senate this session.

Leave your phone number and ask them to call you back.

As we move into the cooler months, many New Englanders will be out chopping fire wood and doing fall yard work. This is prime time for wood and yard debris to make their way to your eyes.

Nobody likes a foreign body in their eye (or an urgent visit to the eye doctor to have it removed)! Luckily many eye injuries and foreign body’s can be prevented with the use of the proper eye protection!

So before Eye Injury Prevention Month passes us by, here is your friendly reminder to take the extra minute to dig out your safety goggles and protect those eyes!

At our eye clinic, we care about the health and safety of our community, which is why we are offering free solar eclipse glasses for anyone who needs them while supplies last. As the solar eclipse approaches, it is important to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.
Looking directly at a solar eclipse can cause serious damage to your eyes, including permanent vision loss. That's why it's crucial to wear proper eye protection, such as solar eclipse glasses, which are designed to block out harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays.
We encourage everyone to come by our clinic to pick up a pair of free solar eclipse glasses and ensure that your eyes are protected during this rare and exciting event. Remember, the health of your eyes is too important to take any risks, so be sure to wear your solar eclipse glasses and enjoy the eclipse safely.
Find out more details on how to protect your eyes during the Solar Eclipse on The American Optometric Association’s website at https://www.aoa.org/.../caring-for-your.../solar-eclipses...

EyeCare for You supports allowing Doctors of Optometry to practice at the highest level of their training and education. Find out how more of your care could happen right in the office.

Calling all community members! Your support is crucial. Reach out to your legislators and explain how expanding the scope of optometric work will elevate vision care statewide. By doing so, we can reduce financial burdens, minimize wait times for procedures, and enable individuals to access comprehensive eye care locally from skilled professionals. Your voice matters in shaping the future of eye care in our community.

Dr. Dean had the privilege to sit down with Lauren Maloney for her segment "What Matters This Week" and talk about Optometric scope expansion. This clip was aired on both ABC and Fox in Vermont and does a good job of summarizing the scope expansion conversation. Optometry is a legislated profession, and so each time education or the standard of care changes we have to go ask for our state law to be changed. How can you help? Reach out to your legislator and ask them to support Optometry.

What Matters This Week with Lauren Maloney.

Lauren Maloney talked with Dr. Dean Barcelow, the President of the Vermont Optometric Association. Dr. Barcelow is in favor of a bill introduced in the Vermont legislature, that would expand the scope of practice for optometrists. For example, he wants doctors to be able to perform specific injectio...

Yesterday I was invited to talk with Brad Ferland on WDEV about Optometric scope in Vermont. I support S.233, which is before the Vermont Senate to expand Optometric scope to allow additional in office procedures. There are a lot of great things about this bill, and a few I don't love, but I want to see it to completion. Hearings start next week, but if you have time reach out to your legislator and ask them to support Optometry moving forward. You can hear all about it here, the Optometry segment starts at 20:40.
