Local Health System Sustainability Project -LHSS The LHSS Project is USAID’s flagship initiative in integrated health systems strengthening.

OBJECTIVES
• Increase financial protection.
• Increase population coverage.
• Increase service coverage of quality essential services. SUSTAINABILITY: A KEY PRINCIPLE
LHSS’s “country-first” approach to technical assistance, means the project works closely with local partners to understand local priorities and economic and political
dynamics, and to co-create and implement solutions that keep local actors and institutions in the driver’s seat.

The path to in is gaining momentum through collaborative stakeholder engagement.

With support from LHSS, Namibia’s Ministry of Health brought together policymakers, civil society organizations, and private sector leaders to co-create a comprehensive policy.

This inclusive approach led to a draft UHC Policy Framework focused on improving quality of care, reducing health disparities, expanding preventive services, and strengthening public health financing.

In partnership with the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Jamaica, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, and the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, LHSS organized a One Health workshop to advance health security.

As faces the largest migration crisis in the Western Hemisphere, USAID’s LHSS Project is strengthening to save lives.

Through the Mentor Hospital strategy, LHSS is equipping health care providers with the skills and tools needed to manage high-risk maternal and newborn cases.

In , maternal mortality dropped by 66%, and zero maternal deaths have been reported in Buenaventura since the initiative began. In 2023 alone, 49,000 pregnant migrant women accessed care through participating hospitals.

This collaboration with local partners is a powerful example of how building health care capacity can address challenges and migration crises.
