The Trump Administration has requested drastic cuts to federal public education funding, including the elimination of the only two grants focused on addressing the workforce shortages of school psychologists. It is imperative that Congress rejects the President's budget request and provides the long-term investments needed so all students can access a world class public education. Join NASP in calling on Congress to protect public education and invest in our schools in FY 2027.

The Trump Administration’s decision to roll back Title IX settlement agreements protecting transgender students from harassment and discrimination reverses critical progress and puts students at greater risk of harm in school.

NASP affirms that LGBTQ+ students have the same civil rights as all students and must be protected under federal law. Efforts to redefine or limit those protections deny students equal access to education and undermine their safety and well-being. Federal civil rights laws must be enforced to protect students, not reinterpreted to exclude them.

This action directly contradicts NASP’s professional positions supporting students’ rights to express their gender identity, use their chosen name and pronouns, and access school activities and facilities consistent with their identity. Denying these protections has real consequences for students’ mental health, sense of belonging, and ability to learn.

NASP will continue to advocate for policies that protect LGBTQ+ students and ensure schools are safe, inclusive, and affirming for all.

For guidance on how to support students in this policy context, access NASP’s resource "Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth When Policies Mandate Discrimination" at https://buff.ly/H6CC1lh

Although communication between school and clinical psychologists is essential for providing coordinated care across settings for children with mental and behavioral health challenges, it is not as common as it should be. By employing intentional strategies, school psychologists can help make collaboration part of routine practice.
