Rare Disease Day is about visibility, validation, and being believed. 💚

Because being believed is the first step toward proper care. And real answers come from connecting the dots, not ignoring them. 💜

At Bethesda, we treat rare conditions like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and other complex connective tissue disorders. If you’ve been searching for answers, struggling to be heard, or living with symptoms that don’t quite fit into a box, we see you.

Share your stripes with us and with the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD). Together, we raise awareness, amplify patient voices, and push for better understanding and care.

“I believe you.”
“Your pain makes sense.”
“You’re not imagining this.”

Chronic pain doesn’t always show up on scans or lab results, but that doesn’t make it any less real. Too many people spend years feeling brushed off, rushed through appointments, or told everything looks “normal,” even when their body is clearly saying something isn’t right.

What most patients need first isn’t another test or a quick fix.
It’s to be believed.
It’s to feel heard.
It’s to know their experience actually matters.

✨ Being believed helps calm the nervous system.
✨ Feeling safe changes how the body responds.

Healing begins when care is rooted in listening—not minimizing—and when the whole person is treated, not just a list of symptoms.

👉 If you’re looking for care that starts with listening, Bethesda Physiocare specializes in thoughtful, whole-body treatment for chronic and complex pain.

📍 Learn more or schedule a consultation to see if our approach feels right for you.

The 2025 documentary "Complicated" is a must-watch for anyone navigating Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) or complex chronic illness.

While the film covers various rare conditions, the parallels to the EDS experience are undeniable—from the frustration of "normal" test results to the exhaustion of self-advocacy. Our latest blog breaks down why this film is so resonant and why validation is a cornerstone of effective treatment.

Explore why Complicated powerfully resonates with patients living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and other complex chronic conditions.

Cold weather doesn’t prevent injuries, especially in hypermobile bodies. In fact, February is one of the most common months for flare-ups.

Common pitfalls we see:
1️⃣ Skipping warm-ups because “it’s indoors.” Cold muscles still need time to activate, even inside.
2️⃣ Ramping up intensity too quickly. Motivation often returns before joint control and tissue tolerance do.
3️⃣ Stretching instead of stabilizing. Joints with extra mobility don’t need more range—they need support.

❄️ Cold muscles and unstable joints increase injury risk.
💡 Consistent, smart progression always beats motivation.
Slow, controlled, intentional movement helps hypermobile bodies stay safe and steady all season long.

Chronic pain doesn’t follow the 1–10 rule. That scale was made for acute pain, like a sudden injury, not for long-term pain.

With chronic pain:
🔹 A “3” today can feel worse than a “7” last week
🔹 Stress, sleep, weather, hormones, and fatigue all change how pain feels
🔹 The number doesn’t capture exhaustion, brain fog, or fear of flare-ups

That’s why being asked “What number is your pain?” can feel frustrating or dismissive. Real progress isn’t just about lowering a number. It’s about:
✔️ Moving with more confidence
✔️ Recovering faster from flares
✔️ Doing more of what matters
✔️ Trusting your body again
Pain scales measure intensity.
✨ Healing shows up in function, freedom, and quality of life.

If you’re hypermobile, stretching isn’t always the answer. In fact, too much stretching can make things worse. Here’s why:
⚠️ It can increase joint instability
⚠️ It overloads already stressed tissues
⚠️ It irritates a sensitive nervous system

For many hypermobile bodies, pain doesn’t come from being “too tight.”
It comes from a lack of control, stability, and support.

💡 Flexibility without stability is just vulnerability.

Many people need strength, coordination, and nervous system regulation before adding more stretch, not after.

If stretching leaves you sore, shaky, or worse the next day… your body isn’t broken.
It’s asking for a different approach.

Living with a rare condition often means spending years searching for answers. 🧬

For many patients, it also means being told their symptoms are unrelated, unusual, or hard to explain. 🩺

At Bethesda Physiocare, we work with individuals whose conditions don’t fit neatly into one diagnosis—such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, POTS/dysautonomia, chronic pelvic pain, and complex pain conditions. These are not “isolated problems.” They involve connective tissue, the nervous system, movement patterns, and how the body responds to stress and recovery. 💙

Rare conditions require more than standard protocols. 🧠
They require listening, whole-body understanding, and care that adapts to the individual—not the other way around.

🎗️ This Rare Disease Month, we honor the resilience of those navigating complex diagnoses and reaffirm our commitment to informed, compassionate, and personalized care.

✨ You deserve to be heard.
✨ You deserve care that connects the dots.

🎬 We’re thrilled to announce the worldwide virtual premiere of COMPLICATED

🗓 Sunday, February 15
⏰ 11:00 AM PST (GMT-8)

The screening will be followed by a live Q&A with the filmmaking team and several of the film’s subjects, offering powerful, behind-the-scenes insight into the stories at the heart of the film.

The film shines a critical light on the realities faced by children and families living with chronic illness and the devastating consequences of medical gaslighting and accusations of medical child abuse.

This is a timely, essential conversation you won’t want to miss.

Our Physical Therapy Process

At Bethesda Physiocare®, we recognize that physical therapy doesn’t just mean treating pain. Quality physical therapy requires education, pain management, training, posture stabilization, strengthening, stability and flexibility to come to the best results. We strive to understand each patient’s daily activities so we can form a plan inside and outside of our physical therapy clinic. During the initial phase of physical therapy, the emphasis is often on pain management and self-care skills. As soon as possible, patients progress towards more functional training, which may include exergaming, specific strengthening exercises, stabilization, posture training, and aerobic activities. Our ultimate goals are to increase the activity tolerance in individuals suffering acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions and to return patients back to a functional lifestyle, work, and recreational activities.

Our physical therapists examine each patient thoroughly and develop individualized treatment plans. While we have several clinical specialties—including orofacial physical therapy, performing arts physical therapy, pelvic pain/dysfunction and issues of continence, and chronic pain physical therapy—our physical therapists are highly skilled in all areas of musculoskeletal dysfunction.
