The need for courageous action today is undeniable. How do you know whether you are a terrorist or a freedom fighter? The answer is the C² Factor—the synergistic application of both courage and curiosity. Our curiosity serves as the most powerful antidote to ignorance and recklessness. It pushes us to seek out information and challenge our assumptions. Having done the risk-benefit analysis, we can then take courageous action.

When personalities are seen as the problem in organizations, well-intentioned others (including busy executives) attempt to act as go-betweens, translating communications from one to the other. This perpetuates the situation, drains resources, and does not hold people accountable for their behavior.

Freedom fighter or terrorist? There is a price to pay for acting courageously without curiosity. Blood (of one form or another) is typically shed. No matter the situation, courage without curiosity is reckless and should never be the path of meaningful change.

The only way to have true empathy is to begin with curiosity. So-called “empathy” without curiosity is merely projection.

Organizations spend millions of dollars on workshops and tools designed to help us diagnose our workplace personalities. The thinking is that once we know our “categories,” it will explain our difficulties and prescribe methods for dealing with difficult relationships. However, focusing on personality workshops to solve relationship problems can have significant limitations.

If you are a professional who provides real value but find yourself struggling against the tide of commoditization, this book is for you! I have known for a long time that I needed to do something but wasn’t sure what. So I avoided doing much of anything. This book is a splash of cold water in my face. It gave me the kick in the… that I needed to get up and do what I need to do. Not only that but it gave me a path to doing it! This is a must read gem! —Joanne Irving, PhD, Psychologist, Author, Executive Advisor, Board Member.
