According to Age Safe America and the CDC, falls account for approximately 25% of all hospital admissions. Falls can cause minor injuries such as bruising, but they can also cause more serious issues including head trauma, broken bones, joint dislocation, large wounds, spinal injuries, paralysis, and even death. If you experience muscle weakness, dizziness, poor balance, if you take certain medications, or if you have medical conditions such as Parkinson's, arthritis, or diabetes, you are at a higher risk of falling. You can prevent falls at home by using the stair hand rail, removing clutter and trip hazards, walking in well-lit areas, and wearing non-slip shoes or house slippers.
