Everytime I witness the miracle of birth, I am in awe. This one though, was extra special. Being able to see this Mama so empowered and so proud of herself for getting the VBAC that she had hoped for, was something extra special. I am blown away by the strength she had and the amazing support of her Husband. Seeing a woman who knew her capabilities but was still cautious, accomplish her ultimate goal is even more amazing and powerful than birth itself. I am so lucky to have been able to be apart of these amazing moments. I am even more humbled that I got to cut this sweet babe's cord. โค Anders, you are a lucky little fella and your parents are absolutely amazing! Your Mom is as tough as they come! Thank you for letting me be apart of this AMAZING moment! This is just one of the many reasons why I love what I do!

I'm so incredibly proud of this Mama! Ashley Heitz Kozicki stood strong with every single obstacle she faced throughout her labor! She never let any of it bring her down! It was beautiful and I am so grateful that I got to be apart of it all! The team work and love that surrounded the birth of sweet Arya makes my heart full! โค

I have anxiously waited for the right time to "officially" announce this and right now feels like the time!! There is SO much love surrounding this that I'm not even sure I can sum it up with words!
Not long after we lost Brayden I remember reading an article about a bereavement suite in Australia, they called it "The Kangaroo Room". It was a special space for families who were experiencing birth and death, all at once. It was beautiful. Jenny and I both talked about how we'd love to be able to help make something like that happen here, where we had our sweet Brayden. Wrapped up in all of my doula work, it has always been on my "list" of things to accomplish. 7 years after Brayden and 3 years into my doula work, that goal is finally in our reach!!
The goal of this fund is to raise enough money to build a bereavement suite at Genesis East and to make sure there is always a full stock of memory making supplies for these families to keep forever. Please, share away! Our first opportunity for fundraising is scheduled and I will post that separately! ๐Ÿ˜

All of this! โค

"When you give birth, prepare to leave your dignity at the door"

NO! Just no.

Birth can be dignified. Birth doesn't have to be awful, traumatic and dehumanising. It's most certainly not shameful.

I've seen plenty of birthing women vomit, poo, sob, scream, groan and roar their way through labour. I have seen plenty of nudity, I've seen tousled hair and messy makeup, I've seen blood and sweat and tears. I have seen doctors and midwives perform examinations and stitch women up.

Never have I thought these things make birth "undignified" - they are simply RAW and POWERFUL in the most vulnerable way.

No, what makes a difference to how "dignified" or "undignified" birth is, is not the woman or the act of birth itself.

What makes a difference is how that woman is treated.

I see dignity when I see a midwife gently hold a mother's hair back as she vomits with each contraction, or places a cool wash cloth on her forehead.

I see dignity in the way a partner lovingly caresses their partner's back, or holds her face in their hands, or kisses her tenderly on her forehead.

I see dignity in the way a care provider quietly introduces themselves, and gently speaks to a woman between contractions, asking her permission for any checks/monitoring to be carried out and respecting her wishes.

I see dignity in the knowing glances and brief smiles between birth attendants as a mama powerfully roars and grunts her way through those final contractions, knowing baby is near.

I see dignity in the way a midwife or doula discreetly removes any poo (totally normal, people!!) as the baby makes room to be born, much of the time with the mama not even realising.

I see dignity when an anaesthetist whispers in a mama's ear, reassuring her that she hasn't failed.

I see dignity in the way the theatre room is quiet as baby is born, so that the first voices the baby hears are that of their parents.

I see dignity, when the woman is treated with respect, when she is treated as a human and not merely a "vessel".

So, do not expect us to lay down our dignity at the door. Instead, TREAT us with dignity and respect - blood, sweat, tears, poo, nudity and all. No matter how or where we birth. Allow us to be simultaneously vulnerable and powerful, and DIGNIFIED.

I am so grateful to have the support from my family, so many amazing friends, and all of the birth workers in the Quad Cities! โค

**I just want to add: A midwife and a doula are very different. Both important roles but it's important to know the difference! A CNM (certified nurse midwife) is a registered nurse who has a master's degree in midwifery. They get to catch the babies! A doula does not have any kind of medical degree. A doula is there to provide factual information to help prepare the parents for their birth, educate them on what a typical labor process looks like, inform them of their choices/options throughout the laboring and birthing experience, and be there to support the parents through the laboring process as they prepare to meet their new baby! It's also important that when looking for a doula, you check for their certifications through the organization that they advertise through. Ask questions, interview multiple doulas to find the right fit for you and your partner ๐Ÿ˜ **

In a couple of weeks, family will be invited over, and everyone will sing "Happy Birthday" to Brayden Buntemeyer on his 7th birthday.
