I'm sure many of you have encountered a seemingly menial situation which led to an illuminating discovery...a realization...an epiphany, if you will. I encountered once such situation the other day while filling out a simple health questionnaire. The purpose of this questionnaire was to gauge the general public's perception about health and wellness. One of the questions that I contemplated was, "in general would you say that your health is excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor?"
The question was seemingly simple, but as I pondered my answer I quickly realized that there were many things to consider when evaluating my health. Should I gauge my health based upon my physique? Should I gauge my health based upon the presence or absence of pain or disease or how often I am stricken with a cold or flu virus? How exactly does one gauge his or her health? This question is more complex than I initially perceived.
The World Health Organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Complete physical, mental, AND social well-being...that is a lot to consider when evaluating your state of health and well being. However, understanding the complexity of health and realizing that the mere absence of symptoms or disease is not an indication of excellent health will change your life. Gone are the days of seeking care only when you are in pain or feeling ill. True healthcare is a matter of building health. It's a matter of making healthy decisions every day. It's an active process rather than a passive one. I encourage all of you to educate yourselves about health and be in tune with your bodies. Stop chasing symptoms and disease and start building health and wellness!
