06/13/2024

Malar edema and eye bags may seem similar, but they have distinct causes and treatments. Malar edema, characterized by fluid-filled swelling in the cheeks, can be influenced by genetics, age, and lifestyle factors like diet (eating salty, processed and ultra-processed foods) and sleep habits (sleeping on your face). If you have malar edema, it’s important to avoid certain treatments like HA fillers, as they can exacerbate the condition. This is a condition we call PHAREE (Post HA Recurrent Eyelid Edema).

For PHAREE, we have a specialized protocol aimed at managing the condition effectively. We utilize Hylenex to remove the fillers and simultaneously tighten the tissue using RF (radiofrequency) technology such as Morpheus. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to achieve optimal results.

On the other hand, eye bags result from fat pads herniating in the orbit due to weakened orbital septum, often influenced by genetics or aging. Our signature Trifecta Lift procedure addresses eye bags effectively. By making an incision inside the lower eyelid, we reduce fat herniation and tighten the septum. Additionally, we may use the patient’s own fat to revolumize the mid-face as needed. Finally, we tighten the skin, completing the rejuvenation process. Understanding these differences allows for tailored treatments to address each concern effectively.
